Why is MacBook Pro slower than iPhone using Speedtest - Microman - 07-09-2023

Speedtest on iPhone can give me over 300 depending where I am in the house.

Sitting at computer I got 95 wired, and 150 wireless.

Different connection methods, different OS, etc.

Haven't said what model MBP or iPhone.

Haven't said what speed your wired LAN is. (How fast is your router or switch's Ethernet port?

Haven't said what bandwidth you're paying for from your ISP.

Haven't said what speed/bands your phone plan covers.

Haven't said whether you've turned off WiFi on your iPhone, so we don't know whether you're measuring your WiFi speed or a 5G connection.

Also, haven't noted whether it's MBps (bytes) or Mbps (bits) that you're measuring.

...

95MBps is a bit slow, but not unusual for a Gigabit Ethernet network.

120-150Mbps is pretty typical for an old 802.11ac 5GHz WiFi device. Newer ones can do much better, but you may be capped by your ISP or limited by the WiFi chip/antenna in your MBP.

Weirdly, if you said the MacBook Pro had different connection methods and a different OS than the iPhone, I would still think the MacBook Pro would be faster if he hadn't said it isn't. Why on the storage constrained, space constrained, power constrained iPhone would that stuff be faster? Lighter workload type stuff on the MacBook Pro? No, that wouldn't be why. There's probably no good reason.

Edit: I assumed he's connecting to the same wifi at home on both.

I get less on my iPhone 12 mini (80Mbps) than on my old 2015 MacBook Pro (100Mbps) on my home wireless. I get 37Mbps on my cellular data connection. This is what I would expect, but I'm relative Stone Age.

hmm, my phone score faster too, all Mbps.

12 mini: 370 down, 373 up
2020 27" intel imac: 369 down, 364 up

ran a couple of tests, all about the same ±5Mbps

EDIT: cellular was all over. 20/6 then 10/2, never consistent. ATT 5G (fake?, no where near any towers) Never use cellular at home, so not sure real world performance.

EDIT EDIT: ATT FiOS, cheapest plan, supposed speeds are 300/300 -- but always tests faster. Sometimes really close to 400/400. think Im paying $35 for it? maybe $45. They offer 1000/1000 for $80 a month, and even 5000/5000 for $180. Used my neighbors address, says Its available.

Good lord, where do people get speeds like that? We've got two providers, one fiber and one cable and neither offers anything like that.

ATT5Ge, market BS baffling.

Have you tried different browsers? When I use Comcast's speed test site, I get much more accurate scores using Safari instead of FireFox. The site seems to be CPU bound in FireFox.
