Got a corporate credit card and everything! I'm going shopping at NewEgg.
I'm thinking some kind of SATA drive in a USB2 enclosure.
Are there any brands of HD or enclosure to avoid these days?

Yes. Though cross-platform ability might be useful on occasion.
