Best SCSI adapter & scanner drivers for old HP scanner on QS Dually in Panther? - Buzz - 02-15-2007

may be fighting an uphill battle here..., but I'd like to move the old (ancient, tank size) HP 6100c SCSI scanner w/ ADF from its home of the last several years attached to a frankenmac'ed beige G3, to a QS dual 800. we have an assortment of SCSI adapters, and would like to know what would be best; adaptec 2930, various flavors of 2940's (apple & retail), atto (apple & retail) and initio.

QS has X.3.9, and HP doesn't support the scanner past 8.6, but it has been running on 9.2.x w/ whatever unsupported drivers were leftover. are there any generic OS X scanner drivers that might work, and then allow a third party program (like PSE, or OmniPage) to control the scanner in the absence of HP OS X software? HP's website makes classic sound like a stretch, so a SCSI device in OS X would be nice, while trying to put off buying something new a bit longer. thanks,

If VueScan doesn't support it, dumpster it....

As for SCSI adapters.. no idea. ONly one I ever used was flakey as all getout... it was an OEM card in a B&W G3 450

There's a narrow ATTO card that might work OK (ATTO ExpressPCI, I think). I can't see much point in attaching the scanner to a UW or U2W card, if it's a narrow device, which I'm assuming is the case: then you'd need to find an adapter or a SCSI cable with a narrow connector on one end and a UW or LVD connector on the other end. Troubleshooting would be more complex if you went with a setup that required an adapter or a special cable.

An Initio Bluenote might do the trick, too. Its external connector is one of those compact narrow SCSI connectors.

This might also be an option:

wow, thanks guys. vuescan says it's latest version supports the HP 6100c under X.3.9 & X.4.x, so that sounds promising on the operational side. on the connection side, that ratoc adapter is $80-$90, plus it would require and additional $30 connector in order to work, so that's getting kinda pricey. I rummaged through the parts drawer, and found the adapter used w/ the adaptec AHA 2930CU Mac controller card. the card has eprom v. 4.0 on it, and w/ plenty of cables laying around, this would be a zero cost hardware option, if it will work, anybody know of any issues w/ this combination of goodies? thanks,

Adaptet 2930 and 2960 have support with the latest OS X versions. As for a driver? no idea

EPROM version 4.3 is the latest and last version of the firmware for the 2930. If you have a retail version of the card, you might still be able to get the ROM update from Adaptec support. There were some issues with sleep and prior versions of the firmware under OS X, don't recall the details.

I researched this a few months ago for a client. Adaptec 2906 and 2930 cards both work without sleep problems that affect some other cards.

I put a 2906 in a G4 AGP and it works great. ATTO cards also get good reports
