ADC to DVI adapters - The Grim Ninja - 02-16-2007 I'm most likely getting a newer computer soon which will come with an ADC capable video card. Since I have two CRT monitors, I need to adapt the ADC to VGA. I may want to upgrade to LCDs in the future. If I buy an ADC to DVI adapter, can I use a DVI to VGA adapter with it? I know it's an extra step, but it shouldn't be a big deal. The main question is, is it common practice for the ADC->DVI adapters to include the analog signal lines, or might they simply skip those? So, if anyone has an ADC-DVI adapter plus a DVI-VGA adapter and wouldn't mind checking, I'd appreciate it. It would save me from needing to buy/sell an adapter when I upgrade. Re: ADC to DVI adapters - incognegro - 02-16-2007 I don't have your answer, but have you seen this? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067RLH/ The list price is a crackup! Re: ADC to DVI adapters - wave rider - 02-16-2007 Sounds like both of your CRTs are VGA? You may end up with an extra adapter... I had mixed (VGA and DVI), so I got the ADC > DVI and used the Apple DVI > VGA too. When I got another DVI monitor, I was set. =wr= Re: ADC to DVI adapters - Lux Interior - 02-16-2007 Hey, I was just looking for one of these at monoprice (they had none that i could find). $990? I wasn't aware the the government was buying these. You'll need a DVI-VGA adapter on top of that. Re: ADC to DVI adapters - The Grim Ninja - 02-16-2007 Right, I'll need two DVI-VGA adapters, which are dirt cheap. ADC->anything is $25+ I was figuring if I went ADC->DVI then DVI->VGA, I could have an ADC->DVI adapter on hand already when I move to DVI monitors. Currently I need: DVI->VGA ADC->DVI->VGA OR ADC->VGA In the future I would need: DVI ADC->DVI I have spare DVI->VGA adapters already. It's just the ease of having one less thing to figure out when/if I move to LCDs. Re: ADC to DVI adapters - Joey Cupcakes - 02-16-2007 Your plan should work technically. I recently picked up one of those Belkin ADC-->DVI jobbers off ebay for $15. (For those keeping score, that's a whopping 98.49% off Amazon's list price!) Re: ADC to DVI adapters - deckeda - 02-16-2007 [quote The Grim Ninja] ... If I buy an ADC to DVI adapter, can I use a DVI to VGA adapter with it? ... The main question is, is it common practice for the ADC->DVI adapters to include the analog signal lines, or might they simply skip those? ... Short answer: Don't think it'll work, certainly not with the Belkin adapter.. Long answer: I too just picked up the Belkin adapter (look for my thread here a few days ago.) The standard Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter supplied with G5s etc. won't connect to it, sorry guys --- I wanted to also hook my CRT up to the ADC port on my Mac. According to http://www.pacificcable.com/DVI_Tutorial.htm, the DVI end of the Belkin is a DVI-D Female Dual-Link, whereas the DVI end of the standard Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter is a DVI-I Male Single-Link --- if you look closely, you'll see that a DVI-I Male Single-Link connector has 4 extra pins on one end with nowhere to go into a DVI-D Female Dual-Link. (Don't anyone get confused on the single-link vs, dual-link here; it's not referring to analog or digital or digital+analog.) The other issue is that because the Belkin adapter is a "DVI-D" cable, it doesn't pass an analog signal. It would need to be "DVI-I" to also include an analog signal. I'm assuming the ADC port has available an analog signal --- 17" Studio Displays w/ ADC were of course CRTs, if that means anything. Anyone know of another ADC-DVI adapter besides the Belkin? (Apple's $99 adapter is a DVI-ADC, not ADC-DVI, so I'm guessing the genders are wrong for here?) This thing will take a DVi port and give you VGA, for a price: http://www.pacificcable.com/Picture_Page.asp?DataName=DC-DA1 ($350!) Re: ADC to DVI adapters - deckeda - 02-16-2007 This guy is offering the ADC cable from a 17" Studio Display. Assuming those monitors didn't perform D/A conversion internally ... then I suppose the port (and this cable) are passing an analog signal? I'll bet a schematic would come in handy! http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-17-Studio-Display-M7649-ADC-USB-Video-Power-Cable_W0QQitemZ290077489787QQihZ019QQcategoryZ81687QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem |
