Gene's story was like a personal horror story.
He seemed like a good guy, but he ended up dependent on a woman he wasn't married to and her kids seemed to fear him getting in the way of their inheritance. They acted on this fear and pretty much ruined the end of his life. What a nightmare. I had a hard time engaging in those threads - I didn't see any solution and had no advice to offer. Part of me wanted to scold him for allowing himself to be so vulnerable, but what good would that do? I certainly wanted to address his woman, but being 62, I'm now seeing the beginning of what old age is like and I understand her fear better now.
I know my mother was like a child as she got older. Fear was never that far away and if she ever thought that me and my sister would abandon her for something she was doing, she would have stopped it at any cost.
I feel bad that I never offered Gene any help at all and then he was gone...

What was the justification of his abominable treatment? It seemed to me that there were concerns about money and his 'soulmate's' children decided the best way to deal with it was to kick him out.
Now that I've been involved in caring for family I can see how this sort of thing happens but its no less repugnant.

as I recall, the only justification was that the kids saw him as mooching off their mother and it was time for that to stop. It was his gal who made the choice, but I can't blame her - she made that choice under duress. The kids pretty much said 'it's him or us'.

Gene had great stories and I must've encouraged him a dozen times to write about them but he was not in a state to do so, unfortunately. So sad.

I'm not saying that they deserve the same circle as hell as Charles Manson, but I hope they know he's nearby.
