Jon Tester’s GOP Senate opponent shot himself in the arm in a national park - pdq - 04-10-2024

No I didn’t! (Well, that’s what you told the Park Ranger). But I was lying then, virtuously!

This takes some serious unpacking (WaPo gift link):

Tim Sheehy, a charismatic former Navy SEAL who is the Republican candidate in a U.S. Senate race in Montana that could determine control of the chamber, has cited a gunshot wound he received in combat that he said left a bullet in his right arm as evidence of his toughness.

[But] in October 2015, more than a year after he left active duty, he told a different story.

Confusedneaky:

After a family visit to Montana’s Glacier National Park, he told a National Park Service ranger that he accidentally shot himself in the right arm that day when his Colt .45 revolver fell and discharged while he was loading his vehicle in the park…

The self-inflicted gunshot left a bullet lodged in Sheehy’s right forearm, according to the written description accompanying the federal citation that the ranger, a federal law enforcement officer, gave Sheehy for illegally discharging his weapon in a national park. The citation said the description was based on Sheehy’s telling of events.

Not true, says Sheehy now. It was a wound he bravely suffered in Afghanistan in 2012.

But, umm…wasn’t there blood and stuff that day in the park? Well, yes - he went to the ER in fact, where they took an X-ray which showed the bullet. Which “triggered his interview with the ranger”. And ended up paying a $525 fine for “illegally discharging his weapon in the national park”.

But now, he says he made the story up then, to protect his fellow soldiers.

:S

See, he really sustained the wound in Afghanistan, and it might have been friendly fire (he doesn’t know, he says), and he didn’t want an investigation, so he never told anyone. So years later, when he…umm…fell in the park, which fortuitously (somehow) left a bullet-sized hole in that same arm, and showed a bullet on the X-ray, he saw his chance to protect his fellow soldiers forever.

Or…at least until he started running for office, and bragging to everyone about his “war wound”. He even put it in his book.

After all this obfuscation in 2015, why was it okay to brag about it now? Well, you know, enough time had passed. He actually says now he had three bullet wounds in Afghanistan, none of which he reported at the time.

It all makes perfect sense.

Well, maybe not “perfect”. There’s more…ambiguities…revealed in the WaPo story linked above.

Lying about anything and everything is a GQP pre-requisite, especially if you want The Don's endorsement.

My sources are telling me that he was shot in Afghanistan by George Santos after a lover's quarrel, and for a few bucks you can probably get Santos to make a video wishing him a speedy recovery.

That might actually be worth it!

Jeez, why would a Navy SEAL feel the need to exaggerate about his service? Just being a SEAL is impressive enough in terms of his patriotic bonafides. Of course, being an excellent warrior doesn't imply anything at all about their ability to govern, but being a SEAL does understandably burnish the sense of trust you would have in the political candidate. So what he did with it blowing up in his face really hurts that trust that he would have had for being a SEAL. He would have been so much better off not lying about it. Dumb.

Did anyone check his record to confirm that he was a SEAL and fought in Afghanistan?

When a politician is caught in such a big fat lie, it's time to fact check everything.

He's a typical GOP screw up.
