I may be perilously close to needing a tinfoil hat, but I keep wondering if there isn't some larger aspect in play. For example, crimes so big that he'd rather go to jail than have them come out. Or, being blackmailed by Trump over those hypothetical larger crimes. Or, being threatened if he talks. Or so forth and so on.
