What Is The Last Macbook Pro That Will Run High Sierra? - chopper - 04-16-2024

Back from my trip. Going to buy a used Macbook Pro but want it to run High Sierra so I don't have to pay Adobe a thin dime.

High Sierra was released 9/25/2017
Mojave was released 9/24/2018

So 2018 models released before 9/24/2018 should run High Sierra.

Looks like there was only one release of MBPs in 2018, and that was in July, so any 2018 MBP is the last that will run High Sierra.

Most MacBook Pro made from 2010 thru 2017 should be able to run High Sierra 10.13.x.

The MacTracker app and lowendmac.com should give you more details

Choose your keyboard wisely, some from this era were trouble-prone.

I hate making decisions about Macs of that era as the 2015 Macs are the last of the "older" ones with replaceable SSDs and good keyboards and adequate cooling before 2016's thinness started up. 2016 and 2017 can be good but once they went to the 6-core 15" MacBook pros, cooling was woefully inadequate. Quad core 13" MacBook pros also have sub-par cooling.

But on the flip side, the GPU tech from 2016 and later was static through the end of Intel Macs so driver support for modern computing is much better on all of these. The 2015s have notably older GPU designs and on video playback, they show their age with high CPU use to keep up with newer video standards unsupported by their older iGPUs.

Chopper,

I'd go with a 2015 model. Something along these lines:

The only reasons to consider a newer model is Thunderbolt 3 ports and/or better GPU tech. However, considering you're running an older version of the OS and older Adobe apps, I'm inclined to go with the machine with better cooling, a better keyboard and an easily replaceable SSD.

Robert

Hmmm. I do like this KB.

Maybe I should just hit this one with a new SSD and more memory.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)

2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB RAM

?

The 2015 is pretty nice. Mine is running High Sierra and Photoshop CS6. RAM maxing out at 16GB slows it down a bit for Photoshop. I'm using my trusty 2010 Mac Pro (High Sierra) today, and it is definitely better for Photoshop CS6 and Bridge CS6, with 48GB of RAM.

You may run into some snags installing Photoshop in Sierra or High Sierra. You will need to apply a Java update, and jump through another hoop or two.

Install CS6 in Sierra

16GB is already maxed out, same for the 2015s. New SSD with more space can't hurt!

As noted, you're already maxed out at 16GB RAM. And the SSD will be limited to SATA speeds (2.5"), vs you could have an upgradable NVMe PCIe SSD in a 2015 (I have 8TB in mine).

I think the 2012's are starting the feel long in the tooth though. I haven't used my 2015 in a while, but it always seemed peppier than a 2012.

Looks like you'd have to step up to a Mid-2018 model (awful butterfly keyboard and touch bar) to get more than 16GB of RAM (came with up to 32GB, not user upgradable, same with SSD, not upgradable).

Is there software that allows us to run prior OS's on Apple Silicon? I have a vague recollection of something like that, but I may be misremembering....
