New AppleTV 4k in the House - Rolando - 04-17-2024

My RokuTV died earlier this year, switched to an old 50" 1080p (looks great as long as I don't look too close) but was using an old Roku Ultra box.

The Roku in the old TV was starting to get sluggish with apps, constantly needing to re-download apps, and some were getting a little slow, so I had planned on getting an AppleTV and 'lobotomizing' the smartTV.

So I got on apple.com, saw I can pay 21.50 a month for 6 months, interest free! So I thought, why not? I was going to be in the area where the AppleStore is anyway tonight. Ordered and went back to work.

After work, went to dinner and then picked up my AppleTV. I had gotten a link to add a code to my wallet. I flashed it and my ID, Applestore guy asked me to wait a few minutes, then handed me a bag.

Brought it some, plugged in the HDMI and power, chose English and the setup was easy.

Downloaded the Youtube, Max, Disney+ and Netflix apps, logged in. DL the PlutoTV app as well.

Made a FaceTime call to my wife in the other room, that was pretty cool.

Anything I'm missing?

Just be sure to use it to 'learn' your TV's remote, so that you only need to use the ATV remote.

Open the FaceTime app on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), then select your profile on the Continuity Camera screen.

Love my ATV - I use it every day. Actually, I use it to stream SiriusXM to my home audio setup more frequently than I do to watch TVs or movies.

I think my ApeTV is first generation but I am not sure. I’ll check when I get home.

Good deal! We have a AppleTV and Roku Express on our main TV.

I have a AppleTV 4K 1st Gen., never really understood why they labeled the Generations the way they did. When you think 1st Gen. you think well very first one or at least I do. I guess because it was the 1st Gen. 4K.

My very first AppleTV was a 2012 2nd Gen but much older than my 4K 1st Gen. You can't add any apps to this one.

My current AppleTV is a 2017 32Gb 1st Gen. 4K.

I always tell people I use the AppleTV 95% of the time for it's UI, speed and I just all round like it. I use the Roku for its variety of apps. There's many apps on the Roku that'll never be on the AppleTV.

Was almost ready to buy one and realized that there hasn't been a refresh for two years. Decided to wait and see what develops next quarter. Feels like there might be a new generation on the market within the next few months if the roomers are believable. That might mean a few things: 1) new advanced features on Gen 4; 2) a price drop on the perfectly capable Gen 3.
