Dickey Betts, RIP - Will Collier - 04-18-2024
Gone at age 80, and given how tumultuous Betts' life was (often due to his own decisions), it's kind of a miracle he lived as long as he did.
Jaimoe is now the only living original member of the Allman Brothers Band.

The Allman's created a new category in music and Betts was a big part of that. Not many can say that.
I first saw the allmans in 1989 in sacramento - it was a very late scheduled show - I think it was announced on a friday for a sunday show. This would sometimes happen when bands found that they had extra time (or extra need of $) - they'd add a show before or after the big bay area show.
I remember walking onto the field and it was empty. There were perhaps 2000 people around the stage and a few hundred in the seats rather far away. I remember leaving my spot at the very front during a song I didn't care for - going to the bathroom, buying another beer and get back to my spot well before the song ended - 5min easy.
So it was and EASY show...
but not just that... This was the first time that the band tried to recreate the Duane Allman version of the band bringing in Warren Haynes to play the slide parts and IT WAS STUNNING!
One of my all time favortie shows overall. Saw them several times afterward, but not after the last implosion. Once too many original members are gone, it just aint the same.

Try it sometime, Betts used the blues scale almost exclusively. While it’s certainly hard to play his songs the way he played them, the notes aren’t actually that difficult to find.
Now, Duane’s parts, fuhgeddaboutit.

so much great music from that lot.
like the Dead, they were way too popular in my high school years and didn't really listen to them until my 30s.
The Dead took till 60 to go back and listen.

This. It's the only live (modern music) album I've put on regular rotation in recent memory. Maybe Alchemy from Dire Straits is also great but Fillmore East is just a different level. Jazz and Classical are always "live" so that don't count.
