This side: How does Christmas/Chanukah look for you? - SteveG - 11-25-2024

One month to go....

Lots of contention when the family gets together for Chanukah and Christmas.

I imagine Israel is going to be a big topic for both holidays. Selling out Ukraine and huge tariffs might be another.

So, are you finally going to tell off your idiot brother-in-law? I suspect 'peace on earth' is not cutting it this year.

How many Reuters photographs are you going to bring?

I don't have to...my family doesn't fall for low-level propaganda...no matter what their views are.

Looks like it'll be a two-fer from here. Another Santa Ana Wind dried Channukah bush dropping needles in the front window, just awaiting a spark from the electric menorah to set it free - but at least they won't have to be up as long this year!

The Elf on the Shelf and the Mench on the Bench ought to be up to this season's task.

I will be so happy when the holidays and my Insurrection Day birthday are over.
I look forward to the middle of January.

Will Superbowl mark the end of the season of conspicuous consumption?

I suspect 'peace on earth' is not cutting it this year.

As long as some Arabs hate Jews, and some Jews hate Arabs, no there is no peace.

Same can be said about Russians and Ukrainians.

and many, many others.

My family (and our friends) have very disparate political opinions--from far left all the way to far right and everywhere in between. We decided, years ago, that our relationships were worth far more than whatever idiot (from anybody's individual perspective) was in office, locally or nationally. So, politics don't come up for more than a sentence or two and overwhelmingly people don't respond to a comment, letting it just die. People of like political persuasions do have side conversations about various issues when others are there, but don't try to bait the other side. There was one uncle who was an exception-he was far left and spent a lot of time trying to tell others just how they should think and that they were idiots if they didn't vote his way. He was generally ignored by everybody when he did this and so it never really caused much of a problem, although the righties among our family really didn't much like him and when he died, a general, "Oh, well" (well, maybe, "Good!") was the response of the righties.

One exception among our friends (family all lives far away) seems to be our US Representative, Marjorie Taylor Greene. Our friends, from far left to far right, all think she is a complete moron. But, given that we all think she's an idiot, there's not a lot to talk about other than hoping that Shawn Harris (who is impressive as hell) would beat her. Or that she'll go into the Trump administration just to get her out of NW Georgia. We can still hope for that...

Last holiday of enough relevance for my family to get together is Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is really the only holiday remaining, to my mind; the others have jumped the holiday shark.
