OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Voryn - 03-06-2007 I have a mac (no i dn't know what model) but its a g4. Its on a LAN and it can access the internet BUT now it will not connect to any other mac on the network. I could use a few suggestions. Restarted router, i have double checked all the configurations on the mac to make sure its the same as before (as well as another mac) . The only thing to change in the last 24 hrs is a power lose to a server, a copier and a router in that area. Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking - Paul F. - 03-06-2007 How are you trying to connect to other Macs on the network? (Go->Connect to Server ? or ?) You can find the model of Mac by going to the "About this Mac" in the Apple Menu. That'll give us a start on trying to diagnose things if it happens to be hardware problem. (though since you can connect to the internet, I doubt that's it). Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Voryn - 03-06-2007 I just didn't grab the model when i was working on the machine, tech department is small and short handed today so i had to leave the mac before pulling its model . I know its a quicksilver or later but i think its a MDD (have to go look) . I'm new to this company and scary enough the Mac part of the company set all their stuff up on their own. I'm still attempting to get all the information but from what i've seen is they connect to each other through local area network as guest or a registered user. Unfortunately the tech department turns a blind eye as 3/4 the company is on windows and none of tech know macs at all. I do know macs to an extent but networking with them is something i haven't gotten to play with just yet. Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Voryn - 03-07-2007 any one able to help??? Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Donkey Hotay - 03-07-2007 Look at the mac's help (in Finder, Help->Mac Help, or fan-?) (try the Index, letter N, various network topics) When you get the mac back, you will have to double check the Network settings panel in the System Preferences . Look at the other macs' Network settings in their System Preferences ... are they running AppleTalk ? If so, you want your mac to be running AppleTalk. Find out what make & model no. the router is. Check the mfr's specs for the router & verify that it can support AppleTalk protocol/packets. They are different in size and content than the usual TCP/IP packet traffic. On your mac, start the Network Utility (Applications->Utilities->Network Utility) and attempt to ping a system on your LAN whose IP address you happen to know. If that works, then try pinging another mac on the LAN. If that works, try connecting to that mac. (In the Finder, fan-K will bring up the server connect dialog). A trip to the Apple Support site and a search for specific networking issues should turn up forum discussions and technotes to read. There are as many ways for networking not to work as there are systems, routers, servers and protocols on the same network segment as your mac. That you can get to the Internet (which is strictly TCP/IP) indicates the other macs are expecting your mac to use AppleTalk. That networking used to 'just work' until the router took a hit, implies that the router used to pass AppleTalk packets but no longer does. It has the ability, but the default configuration after power reset is not to pass AppleTalk. That's my US$0.02 or less. Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Voryn - 03-07-2007 thanks for info . Re: OSX 10.3.9 networking help please - Voryn - 03-09-2007 I have failed myself as being knowledgable on macs..... After working with winblows machines for last 5 to 6 months, i did 1 simple thing and fixed this issue..... REPAIR PERMISSIONS. all went back to normal minus 1 thing. The mac can now print, and connect to other macs but the other macs do not see this quicksilver on the network. |
