Bumper Strength Notice - hal - 02-27-2025

I suppose all hell breaks loose at 3mph

remember when a 5mph collision wouldn't even get people out of their cars to inspect possible damage - that's what bumpers were for! Now?

I remember when my Dodge Dart Swinger stalled and would not restart - I asked the guy behind me to push my car with his bumper (remember THAT?) and he said that he couldn't because he didn't have a bumper - I looked and it was just fiberglass like all cars are now. Giving me a little push would have messed up his car. I looked back at him and he shrugged.

I miss bumpers that were useful...

I saw this on the car next to me when I parked at the store... Not sure, I'd buy a car that couldn't guarantee no damage to the car if it's hit ON THE BUMPER at 2.5mph

The bumper standards saved us money on insurance claims, more than offsetting their cost to make, but the car manufacturers got it killed.

We could even jack the car up from the bumper to change a flat tire! Like with so many products today, what you see is not what you get.

Bumper jacks were tremendously dangerous. Thank god they are no longer used.

I recall my dad's 69 Chevy Biscayne and my brother's 77 Nova had them. I was just a kid but they looked scary as hell!

Yes, I bemoan this fact all the time. The fact that a bump at 5mph causes thousands of dollars in damage should be criminalized.
