Google Maps sucks ass! - AllGold - 03-01-2025 Coming home tonight I decided to stay off the interstate and take rural highways. I have taken this route from the same location before so I just put in Home in Google Maps and didn't think anything of it. About a quarter of the way in, it put me on a gravel road. I thought WTF? I'm sure I had it set to "avoid unpaved roads". So I stopped and checked. I could find no such setting. I mean nowhere could I find a setting that had anything to do with unpaved roads. I continued on, hoping to get the hell off the gravel road ASAP. Then it put me on another gravel road. This road, while gravel seemed to be in good shape; smooth and no potholes. So I sped up to about 45mph. Then out of nowhere I came upon big potholes. I swerved and successfully avoided them... but then encountered an absolutely gigantic pothole which I couldn't avoid. The car bottomed out with a huge bang. I'm still trying to figure out if anything got damaged. Fuck Google Maps! Waze does have the setting to avoid unpaved roads. I have never really cared for the interface of Waze, though. Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - special - 03-01-2025 about 10 years ago I used "Here" since that was one of the few Apps that allowed offline maps back then, or at least that i was aware of. I was driving though Europe and it took me though a cemetery. Seriously. Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - Fritz - 03-01-2025 you're right. stoopit lack of feature. went to visit friends in Vt a few years back and ended up on dirt roads with the goog. I don't care for the interface either, but I use Waze when I need To boldly drive where no asphalt has gone before. like everything else goog nothing gets fixed. like apple and mail, iTunes/Music/LogicPro and some others. intergalactic corporations answer to shareholders only, and if the company is profitable, nothing else matters. Although the goog has been pretty sad since agent orange was flushed in. As have the rest of the mag7(8). Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - Speedy - 03-01-2025 Yes, it can really suck. Best to look over your planned route much like we did when maps were on paper to see how realistic the plotted route is. We recently got caught in a loop where we went by the same spot three times due to a Sunday market and some unreported road construction. It also dumped us onto local streets that may have been shorter rather than a much faster but ever so slightly longer bypass. Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - Lux Interior - 03-01-2025 Does that cost extra? Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - Acer - 03-01-2025 I've had it sort of lose its mind to take me on roads that may have been shorter as the crow flies, but not as a driver would choose. Perhaps a local Google maps user frequents those roads. Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - Fritz - 03-01-2025 ![]() Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - d4 - 03-01-2025 These navigation apps will do you the wonderful favor of saving 8 mins driving time on a 3 hour drive by detouring onto a local windy harrowing cliffside road to avoid sitting in some highway traffic. You're welcome. Hah! Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - GGD - 03-01-2025 d4 wrote: I avoid the "faster detours", and just stay on the routes that I'm familiar with. And I often find that whatever they thought was causing a delay had actually been cleared up hours ago and there's no delay at all. Re: Google Maps sucks ass! - srf1957 - 03-01-2025 Last Dec. the freeway over the blue mountains was closed due to winter conditions . About 12 idiots in cars used google maps to start up a road that is not maintained in winter and maybe graded once or twice in a year . One person got 6 miles up it . County took a road grader and search and rescue on snowmobiles to get them out . They got stuck and road drifted shut behind them . If they would have checked trip check it says all these roads are not alternates to I-84 . |
