NATO considering dropping US - Ombligo - 03-22-2025 Europe’s biggest military powers are drawing up plans to take on greater responsibilities for the continent’s defense from the United States, including a pitch to the administration of President Donald Trump, for a managed transfer over the next five to 10 years, according to a new report. The United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Nordic countries are among those engaged in the informal but structured discussions that would reshape the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) security bloc, The Financial Times newspaper reported on Thursday, citing four European officials involved. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/3/21/europe-working-on-plan-to-replace-us-in-nato-in-five-to-10-years-report I'm not surprised and even predicted such a move in an earlier thread. I would also expect the new alliance to drop Turkey and possibly Hungary. I could also see it adding Ukraine if it still exists in five years. Re: NATO considering dropping US - Spock - 03-22-2025 Putin will be rubbing his hands whilst whispering "Divide and conquer, divide and conquer". Of course, Trump could do what he seems to be doing to the Dept of Education and defund NATO at some level. But, just leaving would be a problem. https://www.kaine.senate.gov/in-the-news/congress-approves-bill-barring-presidents-from-unilaterally-exiting-nato But, he might well sign something that hands over big chunks of historic US defense of NATO without leaving. But the listed time frame goes past Trump and if Trump does, in fact, agree to a handover, then I think whoever becomes the next President would likely call up the Nato countries and say, "Oops!" and go back in. I think even JD would, although if one of the Trump kids somehow makes it to President, who knows... But my bet is that when the European NATO countries take on a bigger defense role, Trump will trumpet his ability to have gotten them to do it and say that all is well with NATO now, thanks to him being the best negotiator of all time!!! Re: NATO considering dropping US - TheCaber - 03-22-2025 Well, defunding the United Nations is always an option, as is raising the rent for all non-citizens. A practice with which he is well acquainted. Re: NATO considering dropping US - timg - 03-22-2025 Lemon Drop wrote: Agree. It looks like leaving would be difficult, but I don’t know how that affects getting kicked out. Wouldn’t getting kicked out allow us to invade NATO countries a la Canada, Panama and Greenland? Pretty far fetched, but who knows with these guys.
