Respecting difference, promoting understanding. Re: Attention ALL U.K. Posters: BACK TO WORK! - cbelt3 - 03-12-2007 Alas, the Empire is no more, so you've got nothing much to celebrate. Then again, do you really want these nations back ? Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan.... Re: Attention ALL U.K. Posters: BACK TO WORK! - voodoopenguin - 03-12-2007 The Empire is definitely confined to history and in this day and age that is the correct thing. The Commonwealth is a group of countries that grew out of the Empire and wish to remain in close contact with the UK. Some even keep a small version of the Union Flag on their own flag and that is their choice. The Commonwealth provides a forum for a group of countries from all over the world to meet, discuss and come to agreements that are mutually beneficial. Unlike most other groups it is not together because of a particular area in the world, a particular religion or because of their economic standing and this allows discussions which could prove more difficult in most other situations. I don't think that 'we' would want any country back as part of our Empire but if certain criteria are met then the Commonwealth would certainly allow countries that were in the Empire back into the group. I certainly believe that the advantages of having this forum for discussion are many. |
