I've done everything suggested. Short of replacing the battery or the thermal paste on the CPU. She doesn't run Chrome. However, she does run Brave, which is a Chromium browser.
Her disk drive is hardly full.
I took off the bottom plate to blow out the dust bunnies but there were none. For a house with three cats, I was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was.
The last time her fans ramped up, I monitored the CPU usage. These are all the processes that were pegging the CPU at any given time over about ten minutes...

Which I think are all Apple processes.
So at this point, I have no idea. Her computer literally died today in 15 minutes. She was in Brave, typing things into her website calendar. She had Word open, working on her AP lit project. She also had Mail and Messages open. That's it.
OTOH. She is sitting here next to me with all the same apps open, and there's no issues at all. Its very intermittent.
As if thats not bad enough, the time on her computer is wonky. It shows that today is Monday. Not Tuesday. And the time fluctuates between the hours.
At this point, we're probably just going to take it to the Apple store. In June. When she's out of school.

Click on the battery-menu.
Does it say "service battery" ...?
Option-click on the Apple menu and select "System Information." From there, click on the "Power" category under "Hardware" and then copy/paste what it says under "Battery Information," please.

I can't quite parse all the info, but I can say that if the "Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3404" indicates the maximum charge the battery can hold, that it's really weak. When new, the full charge capacity was around 5100 max.

At this point, I'd do an erase and reinstall of the OS. If that doesn't fix it, definitely a hardware problem. Unless it is under Applecare it will not be worth fixing.

Depending on the reporter, seems to be about 4300 mAh to begin with. Should have about 80% of the original capacity.
For an old Intel Mac >400 cycles is scary, but the batteries are now rated for 1000 cycles and more.
Losing the time/date suggests a battery problem, but not seeing that in the stats.
...At this point, I suggest running a hardware test.
