I've cut back on sugar quite a bit these past 2 or so years. It's been a long time and they don't taste "richly" chocolate. It's more cloyingly sweet than I remember and the cookie part is a little bit too crispy. I'm probably wrong. Somethin' ain't right.
When we were kids, my mother would give us 2 cookies and a small glass of milk. That felt like plenty. Now I want to take out a whole row.

Once you have been consuming less sugar for a while, a lot of stuff starts to taste too sweet.

The recipe probably has changed: the ingredients themselves may not be what you are remembering, and so the cookies will be different than you remember. For instance, there are differences between different sources of cocoa, or they could be using a different ingredient that most perceive as chocolatey. Change the ingredients of baking goods, and you change texture, crispness etc.

Were you eating the "thins" they are much thinner and crispier than regular Oreos

I've had those before. These cookies are far from bad. But just a slight flavor stance wasn't quite what I expected. I'll never stop eating them.

Many childhood snacks taste different nowadays due to ingredient changes like elimination of partially hydrogenated oils/trans-fats.

Have you tried a Butterfinger lately? I'm not saying the new recipe is bad, but it certainly is different.
