The teens hadn't booked accommodations for their full stay in Hawaii, which raised concerns for Customs and Border Protection—even though both had valid travel authorizations through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
"They found it suspicious that we hadn't fully booked our accommodations for the entire five weeks in Hawaii," Pohl said.
They're young folks exploring the world, for God's sake. They look for the local youth hostel. If it's full, then they go to plan B and try to find a cheap hotel.
The teens said they were questioned for several hours at Honolulu Airport before allegedly being subjected to full-body scans and strip searches, according to the report.
...The duo spent several days in a detention facility before being deported, despite holding valid travel documents and having no prior infractions.
And then they were deported.
Farewell foreign tourism to the US. At least for now.
But it's gonna take a couple of years (or a regime change) to repair the damage.

Honestly, I hope this happens. Not because I have something against young US tourists (I have some in my family), but because this is the only way to see how it feels when we do it to others and maybe we shouldn't be treating others like human scums if we do not want to be treated the same way.

Some years ago, a friend of my wanderlust-filled daughter opined that her goal in life would be to be a hobo in Europe.
I guess those days are on hold, if not gone forever.

Australian border control frequently reject entry if they suspect the "visitors" don't have:
- Sufficient funds to last their stay in the country
- Travel plans they can explain and pay for
- Existing reservation for their departure
The thinking being that they might:
- Be intending to stay after visa expires
- Work illegally to raise money (not permitted on a tourist visa)
- Become destitute and require financial assistance from the government
Additionally, where the tourists were entering the country from can be a red flag; is it a location where drugs and other contraband frequently enters from.
