Transfer from iPhone 8 to new iPhone 16 Pro Max -questions - Randalls - 04-30-2025

Updating my current iPhone 8 on iOS 16.7.11 to new 16 Pro Max. Did search forum and watched YT videos but any advice appreciated.

I will do a phone to phone transfer as advised. I wonder if my iCloud account is up to date (currently pay for 200gb). My old phone gets a warning that “to use iCloud on this phone I must accept new terms and conditions” but always get “Cannot Complete Action at this time”. Is this due to having an old iOS?

I will not reset the old phone until I am sure the new phone has transferred all info correctly. Currently showing 47.8gb used of 64gb.

I always liked the fingerprint PW button. Any great downside to skipping face recognition and using only the keyed PW?
I guess I am overly paranoid but read that folks can force the facial recognition but can not force a keyed PW.

Anything else I should be concerned about?

I bought the 16 Pro Max to future proof my phone needs and hope to make it last as long as the iPhone 8. I bought both at the Costco kiosk (T-Mobile) and should receive a $100 Costco credit. I grandfathered in on the old T-Mobile seniors (55 up) plan 2 unlimited lines for $60 so did not qualify for any other discounts. I will have to update my wife’s 8 down the road. She is very happy with it and did not want to upgrade at this time.

I'm pretty sure it'll go well. I've done this, albeit with newer iPhones.
Enjoy your Internet Phone 16 Professional Maximum.

Thanks. 40k images so I am addicted to phone photography so looking forward to using the new set up. Will not want to use maximum size pix though

If you pay for Amazon Prime, you can back those images up in "Amazon Photos" for redundancy sakes. Unlimited photos but just 5gb worth of videos (you have to pay for that).

Thanks, I have been using Amazon Prime photos but my 8 was a bit overwhelmed in my recent update attempt. Hopefully things will go faster now. Also going to link up some AirPod Pro 2 as a cheap temporary hearing solution using the upgraded iOS

Unless you have a twin, facial recog is awesome. I miss the home button too...

Sure people can force facial, if they knock u out and hold the phone up to your face... but could done the same with your finger. Wink

You can transfer all the data directly from your old phone to the new phone without using iCloud: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102659

It was surprisingly fast when I did it recently (iPhone 16 Pro). I had 60+GB and I expected it to take a couple hours, but it only took about 15 minutes.

You can also use iCloud--and they temporarily give you as much storage as you need for the transfer--but my guess is iCloud would be a lot slower.

I would go ahead and set up facial recognition. You can always turn it off later at any time, but I think you will like it and keep it on. As jdc pointed out, it's as much about physical security as anything. Also, even with facial recognition, it periodically makes you enter your password again anyway.

I just went to a 16 from an 8. Seamless transfer, but I had to call t-mobile to activate the eSIM card.
