headphones for the kids - davemchine - 03-13-2007

Since I'll be giving my 5gb ipod to my daughter I'll be needing a pair of headphones for her. I think she will need over the ear styles rather than in ear. Where can I buy a pair? btw, she is 6 so an adult size headphone might not fit.

Why does a six year old need an iPod? To insulate herself from her surroundings?

I'm coming to think that iPods create problems in families, problems with communication. I say this as a grandfather and youth coach. People today often use iPods and other technology to replace themselves in kids lives.

Forget the iPod, take them skating or teach them chess or show them how to ride a horse. Spend time with them. The iPod robs you of that. When you take them out on that first horseback ride (or equivalent) make them leave the iPod behind. Go camping and leave certain stuff behind.

Let me add that once they get "hooked" on iPods, you'll be hell bent to change it. My suggestion is that you delay that decision as long as possible. No way I'd ever want a 6 year old to have an iPod, peer pressure or not.

My kids listen to educational podcasts, language learning (eg-Grammar Girl) and Weird Al.

Good luck with that.

It's true. You sound like my 7th grade teacher that did not believe my house did not have a (hot) water heater.

WTF?!?!
What does you not taking a bath/shower in the 7th grade have to do with this?

Here's a pair made specifically for kids that looks interesting:

also, here is a site that sells headphones for schools, they probably have some that will hold up to the rigors of use by a 6 year old.

I'd go with the over the ear style, my daughter is 12 and only started using earbuds in the last year or so, before that she didn't like the way they felt and also didn't like sticking anything in her ears.
