re-powder coating - Rain - 03-21-2007 I have a set of brake rotors I want powder coated. They are currently powdercoated black, but in bad bad shape. What prep work do I need to do before I can powdercoat them again? (strip em to bare metal or just acid bath and etch, etc?) Re: re-powder coating - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 03-21-2007 For wheels, a common solution is to bead blast them to bare metal and then powdercoat. For rotor carriers I imagine that same procedure would work, but I don't know if that's the most efficient scheme. Re: re-powder coating - Big Daddy Cool - 03-21-2007 are you sure you're powdercoating the rotors? Brake rotors wear down and wouldn't be very effective if they have a shiny powdercoating on them. Do you maybe mean the calipers? Re: re-powder coating - Rain - 03-21-2007 Rotor hats - (but still the rotor) these are two piece, Baer Eradispeed rotors, fyi) Re: re-powder coating - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 03-21-2007 Ah, you're talking about automobile brakes. Thought you were referring to motorcycle brakes, hence my remarks regarding rotor carriers. Re: re-powder coating - BigGuynRusty - 03-21-2007 Are you sure they are powder coated? The Baer brakes I had on the SVT had a high ceramic paint on the hats. But if they are, have them blasted and redone. No acid will touch powder coating, physical removal, scraping, blasting that sort of thing will sometimes work. How did they get messed up? Must've been something radical, powdercoating is melted on plastic. BGnR Re: re-powder coating - Rain - 03-21-2007 well - dunked em in an acid bath of Kleen Strip to remove any inside rust, some of it dripped on the hats and spotted em. SO, i fully emersed em in the Kleen Strip and the black turned faded purple in places.. So I just wanna re paint em. Re: re-powder coating - Rain - 03-21-2007 So I ASSUME they are powdercoated.. Re: re-powder coating - BigGuynRusty - 03-21-2007 [quote Rain]So I ASSUME they are powdercoated.. Probably correct, start scraping. I don't even think mediablasting is gonna take off that powder coating. You might try a high heat paint that adheres to plastic. BGnR Re: re-powder coating - Rain - 03-21-2007 Considered the hi-temp paint. I've used it on the calipers before with great success.. but the first time ya go to clean up the area and get any brake cleaner on em, they are ruined. (good thing its easy to touch up or repaint calipers) May go that route. few coats of hi temp paint and a few coats of clear. |
