Avg hours sitting at your computer - mikebw - 03-21-2007

Not to sound judgemental, but for everyone who seemed concerned about how many hours people spend watching TV every week, it occurs to me that many of us probably well exceed that number in hours at our computers online, quite possibly at this forum.

I watch TV maybe 10 hours a week at the most, more like 5 hours average. But when it comes to the Internet, I am probably over 40 hours a week. I may be a special case since I spend almost all my time at my job on the computer, and much of that is non-work related stuff. It's not a problem or a concern for my employer because of the nature of my job, so don't think I'm just slacking off all the time.

So in addition to computing time at work, I am also on the computer at home for at least another 10 hours a week. Not just online, but doing web design stuff, audio editing, etc... I also exercise and do other things on the side no involving a computer, so I am not overweight or otherwise affected by this, but I just wanted to put this into some perspective.

Mine are all well above average.

...and I'm also watching a replay of the Yankees game right now as well.

I was thinking about that too. But then again, I don't get paid to watch TV, but the internet actually is part of my job.

Computer usage solely at home: More than it should be.
Computer usage at work: I use the internet at work.
Computer usage at school: more than it should be.

Computer usage overall: Alot more than it should be. Heck, it's 12:12 AM and I'm posting this message. HA!

Yes, I use a computer a lot more than I watch TV, and a lot more than the average person does.

1. My job involves looking at/using computers all day long. So that's 8 hours/day x 5 right there.

2. I also teach classes on computer usage. That's another 8 hours a week.

Even putting those aside, however, I still put in at least two hours a day on my own personal computer. But I don't think this is a fair comparison.

Most of us (ie power users) are not just staring at the screen. We're DOING things, and the computer is one or the primary tool to accomplish that. I don't think of video editing, for example, as "sitting in front of the computer."

TV, on the other hand, is passive. You might be learning something (or oggling someone) but you're not really DOING anything.

To me, that's a big difference. Enough of a difference for me to say that people (adults in general, but children in particular) should not spend large amounts of time watching TV (ie being passive).

Oh I agree. I'm usually doing 3 or 4 things at the same time when on my Mac at home. A G5 with dual monitors helps with this.
For me TV is a good break from the active manipulation of a computer. It provides some contrast and the ability to just sit back and reflect on what it going on instead of being in control of it. But not all TV shows are good for this type of viewing.

40 - 60 hours a week at work, another 1 - 3 hours a day at home. Addicted is all I can say. The 40 - 60 will go when my job goes to China at the end of June. Of course I have to train the Chinese techs that they're flying here to learn. Otherwise they'd have dumped us sooner. Meanwhile company stock and profits are up and our CEO took home some big bucks.

"According to a regulatory filing Monday, xxxxxxx received $1.75 million in salary, plus $5 million in a bonus-like incentive payout.
He was granted stock options with an estimated value of $3.3 million, plus stock equivalents — valued now at $7.8 million — that represent shares he can receive in 2009 if the company meets certain performance targets.
XXX had already disclosed that xxxxxxxxx stands to receive $1.8 million in salary and a $5 million incentive payout in 2007. Monday's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that xxxxxxxx, also is sitting on deferred compensation that was valued at $35 million at the end of 2006. It is due to be paid through five annual installments after he retires."
