Gig Ethernet Transfer: G5 to Intel iMac Why so slow? - celliott - 04-03-2007
So I want to transfer data from the G5 I have to my new Intel iMac 2.16 Ghz. They are both supposed to have gig ethernet. I don't have a switch that fast so I went directly from one computer to another, opened up file sharing, mounted one computer to the other and then proceeded to copy files. It started out taking forever. I could have copied using floppies faster than that. Why the slow down- I thought it would speed along. I then went with firewire with one Mac in FW mode and it blew it away.
Did I miss something? I'm not well versed in the process, but I expected good things.

you didnt use migration assistant for transfer? it uses FW.

Did you use a Cat6 cable or a standard Cat5? GigE requires Cat6, but it still shouldn't be THAT slow. With GigE I copy over 40MB/sec.

Actually, Cat5e should handle Gigabit... as long as it's good quality and actually rated for Cat-5e, rather than just labeled Cat-5e.
As for why it was going so slow... could have been a bad or substandard cable..
Someplace in the back of my mind, among the other rubbish, I think there is some data about some model(s) of Mac with Gigabit Ethernet that didn't have great gigabit speeds? Or am I imagining it?

Target disk mode with firewire is the way to go.

gigabit works with any cat5 cable -- ive been using gigabit for at least 10 years using whatever cable i had lying around -- speeds were always fast fast
still should be using migration assistant if you are moving from one mac to another...

Agreed on Migration Assistant. May take some time, but it's still the best route.

The gig ethernet in an iMac is much slower then gig ethernet in a Mac tower. My 466 G4 outperforms mt 24" iMac 2.16 C2D when it comes to ethernet performance.

I ended up using Migration Assistant. I'm not sure about the quality of the cable, was it is Cat5. I just thought things should be a lot quicker than they came off.
Question on Migration Assistant: is there a problem when moving from G5 to Intel? Are some things transferred that would interfere? Seems like I remember someone talking about certain things being chnged that shouldn't have been changed. For example, is it possible that some of the items in the Intel OS would be overwritten by something from the migration that shouldn't have been overwritten?

FAQ on when to use Cat6 over Cat5(even "e"): http://www.broadbandutopia.com/caandcaco.html I knew there was a reason for me buying that expensive Cat6 cable for direct connection between my G5 iMac and G4 server!
