New Lexmark network color laser- $22.15 - pdq - 04-07-2007

Well, that's what they're claiming here, after $350 rebate (!):

http://dealmac.com/deals/Lexmark-C534-n-Color-Laser-Printer-for-22-shipped-after-rebate/162446.html

And yes, NextWarehouse _is_ selling these for $372. And the $350 rebate form does specifically list NextWarehouse.

But I don't know if I'm willing to bite and get shot down, and end up with a $372 printer I didn't really need.

But maybe someone else is willing to try...

Yeah- it looks like the carts are $160, per color. Good for 7000 pages. Yikes.

Even still, at 1200dpi and networkable, it's a good deal if you have to purchase the consumables once. After that it might be time to get a new printer.

Why are you all balking at how much the supplies cost?

Have you done the math on these supplies, compared to an inkjet?

All too many Americans know the price, but never stop to consider the cost (or the value....).

Seems worthy of the Run You Fools imprimatur.

It's not just the cost of the supplies elmo. Lasers have a large negative impact on the environment both in energy costs and disposal of consumables (used toner and toner drums). That's why I said it would be worthwhile to use this printer for a year. At that point it can be sold to someone else for a similar price and they can pay for the consumables at that point, making it a good deal for them for the next year.

I might be a real "Run You Fools"® fool if I ran to get this one, but interestingly, I really need a new printer - and have been looking at color lasers.

I think elmo3 is right, the ink jet cartridges are what makes color printing so expensive. I am going right now to get a new cartridge for one of my ink jets... might just stop by somewhere and check out color lasers again.

pdq, does the 7,000 pages at $160 per cartridge come to about $.04 per page? If so, it sure beats ink jet costs... Unless all the colors ran out at the same time. What I want is a color laser that will print in black even if one or more colors are empty, and I don't think there is such a thing...

Here's one of the carts: - pdq - 04-07-2007

As it says, ~7000 pages. Newegg sells the carts for $164.63 shipped. But that's just _one of three_ carts (I don't know if there's a black cart too)

Adds up, for sure.

While we're at it, any rec's for a low-energy-use networkable printer solution? I've currently got a Laserwriter 12/600, which will probably run forever (it's a tank), but when it powers up to print a page, the lights on the same circuit dim. (Does it arc-weld the toner to the paper?!)

I'm also kind of fed up with throw-away inkjet printers. My Epson is used infrequently enough I've got to basically do a head cleaning before each use.
