Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - jcrichardson30360 - 04-13-2007 We have a home office upstairs and I need to run a network cable around (under) the baseboard to another computer on the opposite wall. Running under carpet is more of an undertaking than I want to get in to. My wife is very concerned with not being able to see it so I figured I could just run it under where the baseboard meets the carpet, but realized the standard thickness CAT 5 I have is next to impossible to do it successfully, and I also tried the flat/wide type with no success. I then saw somewhere "slim" CAT 6 cable that looks to be the size of a standard phone cord. Anyone have any experience with this using it the way I intend? Or does anyone have a tip for using standard CAT 5 successfully. I don't especially need CAT 6 speed. It is a less than 5 year old house so drilling into anything would definately not fly with the wife. Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - Ken Sp. - 04-13-2007 There is also flat Cat 5 cable. Is wireless and option? http://www.vpi.us/cable-sf.html Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - mikebw - 04-13-2007 Have you tried pulling back the carpet just a bit? If there is a carpet pad underneath then there will be a tack strip along the perimeter of the room. There is usually some space behind the tack strip and below the molding. I have run RG-56 cable (cable TV) in this space in my apartment with no problem, just get a poker and shove it in there, then lay the carpet back down. Unless of course you have 1/4 round molding after the baseboard, then you won't be able to pull the carpet back. Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - mattkime - 04-13-2007 you want to run cable between two computer in adjoining rooms? just install a cat5 jack on each side. it'll look about the same as an outlet. yes, the home is new but someone should have run cat5 when it was built. do it when she's out. this is one of those things that easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. (assuming you don't royally screw up - but how could you? its only plaster) Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - jcrichardson30360 - 04-13-2007 mattkime- LOL, yes this was a project I had planned to tackle somewhat "discretely". The house IS new enough to have a network jack in almost everyroom with a "homerun" in the open studded unfinnished basement, but this is for 2 computers in the same (pretty big) room on opposite walls. Ken SP - I tried the flat CAT 5 as well but was too wide to make a 90 degree inside turn. Maybe I'll try one more time with the standard stuff again, it just seemed a little too stubborn. Mikebw - Indeed we DO have 1/4 round... Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - Ken Sp. - 04-13-2007 There are also the wall plug ethernet if you have power outlets in both spots. They are not super fast, but will work http://www.directron.com/xe102us.html Let me know if you need a set of 2--I have an extra and can make you a deal. Wireless? Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - mikebw - 04-13-2007 Ah, then all is as I suspected. Only solution then would be to go wireless, or pull back the 1/4 round. Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - mattkime - 04-13-2007 is this on the first floor? if so, it shouldn't be too bad to run another jack to the basement. otherwise i'd pull the carpet up around the edge and just run regular cat5 around the room. you should be able to place the wire near the edge of the baseboard so that its not noticeable or vulnerable. the cabling shouldn't have too much trouble with the corner although it is best that its rounded. Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - jcrichardson30360 - 04-13-2007 Ken - I had thought about those, but figured speed and cost would be a major deterrent. Have you tried them in other areas, because we have a computer in the basement that could stand to be connected. Re: Anyone run CAT5 under baseboard? - Ken Sp. - 04-13-2007 They work over distance OK--I tried them to stream video from one ReplayTV to another, and the speed was not great--but that is a bit much. If you want to try it. PM me--we can work out the details. |
