Small conference room - projector or 1080p monitor? - will2000 - 05-02-2007
I need to give advice on how to rig a small conference room. It has a table with 6 chairs only. One wall is perfect for a projection screen; actually the wall looks so good we may not need a screen.
Before purchasing a projector I wanted to ask about a 42" Westinghouse 1080p monitor. What is a good viewing distance for this one? How wide is the viewing angle? Would it make sense to use a monitor over a projector?

More info: Room size 12'x16', Maximum viewing distance about 11 feet, but the average would be about 8 feet, mostly PowerPoint presentations.

What size of screen are you wanting to throw? 80", 100"...60"?
Based on the viewing distance...sounds like a nice 42" to 60" wall-mounted LCD or Plasma would be nice.
I have a couple rooms like setup like this.

We have a similar sized conference room here and I can't read a thing on the 1024x768 42" plasma they've had in there for years. I would *much* rather have a projector - I've never had a problem reading anything from one.

Sounds like somebody didn't bother tweaking anything correctly to suit the room, if it is hard to 'read a thing' with 1024x768 resolutions settings. Icon sizes...fonts...application-specific enhancements, etc.
Projectors are nice, don't get me wrong because we have many, but depending on the placement in some areas, you have to adjust the lenses, resize (digital), and other tweaks sometimes to get them to fit a particular set space. Many of times this will lead to blurring of text, edges...some areas in focus (or seem to be), and other areas not.

I just put a Pioneer PRO 1140HD - plasma TV - 50" in a room about that size. we do our PowerPoints on it and also have DirectTV hooked up to it. Picture and text are very clear.

I also have a Pioneer 60" PDP-6070HD and an LG 60" 60PC1D in a similar room. Took a very expensive projector out of one...best thing to happen to that room.

We've found that if you are looking at a permanent or semi-permanent installation (e.g. ceiling-mount) , an LCD or plasma is usually the more economical choice. In our business, most of the conference rooms of the size you describe are moving to monitors, but I don't have a lot of experience with them in use to give a rating.

Sweet! Also a plus having DLNA ability to play music/ photos and video directly from a server.
