and I'm assuming a way to 'control' them; force greener design, IMO.

"The American auto industry is in deep trouble and they may require subsidies," said Brown, a three-time US presidential candidate and former California governor.

"They may have to be bailed out by the federal government that has just enabled their inefficiency and their gas guzzling."

The auto companies are in such a mess, because they persistently refuse to build fuel-efficient cars, that they might find it financially impossible to do the right thing," he said.

Coming from Jerry Brown, I'm surprised that the press bothered to cover it.

well, it's in a foreign news source, so I think you're safe.

Bail them out? Please, if the industry has lost touch with the consumer then they deserve to die. They've been in a death spiral for the past twenty years and it's time for them to be put out of their misery.

This is totally laughable. If they just manufactured a good car that people would buy they would be fine.

well, GM+FORD still manufactures 15 - 16 Million vehicles each year.

Someone is buying them. Regardless of your opinion.

15-16 million? Down from what? 25-30?

Amazing. They had a virtual lock on their home market only to fritter it away through a combination of bad management decisions and greedy workers. The American auto industry is an example of incompetence writ large.

Every market leader over 100 years will see a decline in their marketshare. And, it will be dark tonight. Tell me something new.

[quote Jp!]Every market leader over 100 years will see a decline in their marketshare. And, it will be dark tonight. Tell me something new.
Yeah, but did it have to be this way? Here's an industry that had it all; it developed the market all on its own, it had a customer base that wanted to buy homemade products, it had a market where it could charge top prices, etc. yet it still failed. It knew that it was in trouble for over twenty years. Over TWENTY YEARS and it still GOT BEAT at its OWN GAME.

You're going to sit there and say that it's inevitable? Admit it, it was sheer incompetence, that's what.

Re: First calls to bail out US domestic auto industry - Jp! - 05-16-2007

In my opinion yes. No market leader ever stays on top over the long haul. AT&T might have. Thanks congress. I would hardly call the largest auto manufacturer in the world 'failed'.

I like to use the phrase "Nowhere to go but DOWN". And it's proving to be true.

Just because Toyota can sell cars does not make GM incompetent. Now APPLE not being able to sell Macs at a higher rate is incompetence. They should easily be able to push their marketshare further along. So, I guess they failed, too. They were NUMBER ONE with the Apple II and 'desktop'/GUI Operating Systems.
