SilverKeeper under 10.4.9 - anybody besides me having trouble? - tenders - 05-17-2007

My SilverKeeper system was working great for months backing up my NAS drive to a folder on a large FireWire drive. Every day, started at 2:00am, 34 gigs, thousands of files, no problems.

Lately it quit working -- it backs up the first few hundred files and says something like "Backup failed - System Error (-50)". The machine doesn't crash, it's just an error message in a dialog box from SilverKeeper.

I haven't seen a System Error since OS 9. What's -50?

I've reinstalled SIlverKeeper, reassigned the backup source and destination from scratch, rebooted, Disk Utilitied...and no change.

It seems to works fine on a non-NAS drive backing up my Entourage data--much less data, just a handful of files.

The SIlverKeeper website says "compatible up to and including 10.4.8...we have not completed our testing on 10.4.9..."

Anybody else have problems like this? What's an NAS-compatible alternative?

mine runs every night at 11 pm on 10.4.9, works fine

why are you backing up 34 gigs every time?

set it to "synchronize set" -- then it will only copy over what you modified, not every single file again...

are there several machines backing up to the NAS?

Hmmm, thanks, good to know. You're backing up from an NAS too?

> set it to "synchronize set"
I'm virtually certain this is how it's set up...it took about 35 minutes to check each file and copy over any changed ones.

> are there several machines backing up to the NAS?
No, only one is backing up FROM the NAS to a FireWire drive.

Im not using an NAS, with only one mac, that would be a huge speed waster, unless maybe your NAS had 1000bt

i have a 400 gig to 400 gig FW 800 case, about 300 gigs full

it takes about 1 minute for the drives to sync, with anywhere from 1-10 gigs of daily update

Same experience here...SilverKeeper continues to work perfect for my systems, backing up a 1.8TB RAID sub-system on my DC G5 to a 750GB FireWire HD in an AMS Venus case, also set to "synch set". I also use it for my G4 DA PowerMac, backing up a 500GB SATA boot HD to another 500GB FireWire HD. Lest anyone ask why/how I'm using a 750GB FireWire HD to backup a 1.8TB RAID sub-system, I offload any of my day's work that's a big item to a 2ndary HD system, also another 750GB HD in an AMS Venus case, so the late-night backup of the RAID is usually only my User account data, plus Entourage, Office, and any JPEGs or RAW photos/files I'm currently working on with the RAID 0 system, and any iDVD/iMovie/FCE files for current projects.

I've never yet filled up the 750GB HD with a backup. Currently it's about 180GB full so there's plenty of room for daily projects that I don't offload to my other FireWire HD's.

I did a drag-n-drop Finder backup and it took nearly 24 hours to copy all the files and made the computer extremely sluggish. This suggested that the probably was probably not SilverKeeper.

I was concerned that there was something wrong with the data on the NAS but the Buffalo utility reported all was well, and did so quite quickly.

Although nothing else was running amok (ie wired/wireless network printing or web/email access), it appears that my router required rebooting. I started SilverKeeper again after the reboot and it's a third of the way through now, much farther than it got before, and everything appears to be working normally.

Thanks for your help.
