PS3 or Xbox 360 - Blur-Ray or HD-DVD - lipskidder - 05-21-2007

Do both of these machines play both formats or does one only play one of the formats?

Not sure about Xbox, but PS3 is Blu-Ray only.

Xbox 360 by itself does NOT play either. You have to buy an external HD-DVD drive from Microsoft to connect to the Xbox 360 for it to work.

And as drew said, PS3 is Blu-Ray only.

Thanks. Does the XBox compress anything or otherwise make the signal less quality like people are saying cable does?

Perhaps, although it shouldn't. I don't know where you heard that, but there are very few devices out there that can successfully decode a disc and present that information to your display without some degree of signal loss or alteration. Many DVD players utilize a faulty MPEG decoder chip that will rearrange the order of some pixels on screen which may appear to the viewer as artifacts. It all depends on the player. Some people might never notice however.

There is probably some homer theater type website that has done a side by side comparison of the Xbox 360 as an HD-DVD player vs. other brands.
