Just ordered FiOS- - mikebw - 05-21-2007 Moving into a new house at the end of the month and I decided to dump Comcast for various reasons, #1 being that at my new address I actually have a choice. I was getting about 7Mbps download and 384kbps speeds with Comcast, so I went with the 15/2Mbps FiOS plan. I also signed up for their FiOS TV service which is pretty much all the same channels as Comcast but it all comes in on fiber to your house. This will save me about $20 a month over my previous bill. They do have an offer now to include home phone service, but I really don't think I need another phone right now. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - mikebw - 05-21-2007 Oh yeah, and- UP YOURS COMCAST! ![]() (borrowed from Monster) Re: Just ordered FiOS- - wolfcry911 - 05-21-2007 Probably you're best option regarding the phone is to go with a VOIP service. I have Verizon FiOS, had used there phone but wasn't happy with the price. I switched to SunRocket and I'm saving some $1200 over two years time and the service is great. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - blusubaru - 05-21-2007 [quote mikebw]I was getting about 7Mbps download and 384kbps speeds with Comcast I wish I could get that! I max out at ~3Mbps down and 180kbps up. No one seems to know what to do about it to get it up to where it's supposed to be. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - macphanatic - 05-21-2007 blu - what cable modem are you using? Some of the older surfboards don't support higher speeds. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - volcs0 - 05-21-2007 We switched from Comcast to Verizon about 6 months ago and are very happy with the service. It is nice to upload at 300-400 kbps rather than 40 kbps. Since we upload so much to our Smugmug account, this has been a real plus. We still have Comcast cable, but since we're moving next month, we'll just reassess everything once we get to Chicago. We got Vonage about 2 years ago, and it has been terrific for us ($15/month). Unless they go out of business, we'll keep them. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - blusubaru - 05-21-2007 [quote macphanatic]blu - what cable modem are you using? Some of the older surfboards don't support higher speeds. Brand new SB5120. Comcast says the modem checks out well and blames either my computer (MacBook!) or my cabling (all less than a year old). Re: Just ordered FiOS- - mikebw - 05-21-2007 Here's a speedtest I just did at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ using the Washington DC server using my Comcast cable modem. Last Result: Download Speed: 7668 kbps (958.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 358 kbps (44.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Comcast does have that 'speed boost' thing where you can get up to 12Mbps for a short time which is nice, but it won't sustain for long downloads. Where I used to live before I had the 15Mb FiOS service as was able to sustain well over 1MBps (that's one Megabyte per second) ... before that I had 1.5Mbps DSL which was just a bear in comparison. Re: Just ordered FiOS- - blusubaru - 05-21-2007 Yah, I had my numbers confused, as usual ![]() Last Result: Download Speed: 14439 kbps (1804.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1453 kbps (181.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Re: Just ordered FiOS- - jdc - 05-21-2007 [quote blusubaru]Yah, I had my numbers confused, as usual ![]() Last Result: Download Speed: 14439 kbps (1804.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1453 kbps (181.6 KB/sec transfer rate) maybe you arent sure what you have, but those numbers seem excellent -- 1.5 upload speed is stellar im getting 2500/350 with DSL |
