Laser eye surgery. Tips on how to find a great doctor. - weapon - 05-21-2007

I have put money in my FSA for lasik this year and would like to get it done by the end of next month.

How do I find the most competent doctor?

I know for sure that I will not be going to any that advertise $299 per eye sales every week in my sunday comic section.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would second this request -- I just put money in my FSA for the same reason and am also looking! (p.s. how much money did you set aside for them?)

If you live in southern CA, I'd recommend to have it done at UCLA. They are less likely to mess it up because their worldwide reputation in on the line. Actually, our friends and family members have their lasik surgery and breast augmentation (the female ones!) done there.

go for the doc w/ the slickest waiting room, best selection of magazines, drives the sportiest car, and has cutest office staff and medical assistants...

figuring if they screwed up too many patients, they wouldn't still have all the trimmings, or if they did screw up regularly, at least they have great insurance to stay in business w/ all the trimmings...

or ask around in your area for people that have had positive outcomes, and go from there...

I put 3200 away.

I figured 1500 an eye for lifetime touchups.

First-hand recommendations are always good. Second option is to find out what eye clinic in town handles the professional sports eye injuries and/or "repairs" from other clinics' procedures...it will usually be affiliated with a hospital. Bonus points if one or more of the surgeons on staff holds patents on some of the technology used for eye surgery. In my case, I had the recommendations, the clinic was well known for some "saves" on professional athletes, the surgeon who started the clinic had a wall of patents and industry recognitions, and they were using wavefront technology for eye mapping before wavefront was approved for surgery. And, as always, if the surgeon is the least bit "iffy" about you being a good candidate (usually due to corneal thickness), I'd hold off.
