Acomdata uses really cheap, and sometimes off-brand no-name made in China drives. At least that is what was in my FW case a few years ago.

don't get me wrong, I like the ancient Acomdata FW400 case. It is a big one with the built-in power supply, so it takes a standard AC cord, and it has a small cooling fan. I pulled the off-brand 40 gig Chinese hard drive out, and put a 120 in, when I put a 250 into my MDD (that make sense?) It is a fairly stout plastic case. Mind you, this is maybe 4-5 years old at this point.

Almost all pre-built ext drives are going to be USB 2 only if they are on a killer sale deal.
