Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - PeterB - 05-23-2007 What do you guys make of this?: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2007-05-21-at&t-iphone_N.htm "Given Apple's cultlike following, however, Verizon isn't taking any chances. Strigl says Verizon is already working with a manufacturer — he declines to say which one — on an answer to the iPhone." Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - MacMagus - 05-23-2007 Whether Apple's iPhone is a success or not, and whether the clone is any good or not, Verizon still sucks. So assume that this rumor is correct and Verizon will contract with somebody to make the "killer" iPhone knockoff. ...and then they'll cripple it like they do with every other phone they touch. It's Verizon. Move along. Nothing to see here. Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - fmgtech - 05-23-2007 Cingular has the rights to the iPhone for 5 years. I just don't see how this could help because a lot of people will pass on Cingular. Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - anonymouse1 - 05-23-2007 FUD Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - will2000 - 05-23-2007 Verizon is great. I've used them for years. I would consider an iPhone if Verizon carried it. Most of my coworkers use Cingular and they have a lot of problems. Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - ArtP - 05-23-2007 I have had a cell phone for almost 12 years now (since 1995 if I remember right), same number and same company more or less (Airtouch, Cellular One, were gobbled up by Verizon). I have always been reasonably happy with Verizon's coverage and the Network although I don't really care for the pricing (Data plan is ridiculous) and I hate NOT having roll over minutes. That said, sure I would love for the iPhone to come to verizon BUT I am hedging my bet that Apple makes a Phoneless iPhone that will be the next version of the iPod. I have a Treo 650 and it CAN play music, surf the web and do the ring tone thing BUT basically ALL I WANT TO DO with my phone is easily find a contact & call or text message them. IF I want to play music, it will be on my one of my THREE ipods not, my phone. Look at the first iTunes phone - the SLVR, Apple and Cingular did that one time (no version 2) and moved on. I believe that the innards of the SLVR became the clip on iPod shuffle. Yes the iPhone is tempting BUT i am waiting for the iPod version without the Phone. Hopefully my wish will come true by Macworld 2008 EDIT: As far as Verizon's answer to the iPhone, it probably won't be Mac compatible out of the box so UNLESS the cut a deal with the Missing Sync to bundle a mac compatible version of the software, I think I will still wait for my phoneless iPod Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - chas_m - 05-23-2007 1. No cell-phone company -- I don't care which one -- is capable of producing anything that could beat the iPhone. Period, hands down, end of story. If they had been capable of doing such a thing, THEY WOULD HAVE DONE IT. They do NOT care about customer wants. Steve does. Thus, the difference. It will take the industry years to work this out. 2. Is anyone reading that USA Today story SO STUPID that they don't recall the LEGIONS of "iPod-killers" up to and including the Zunebomb that completely failed their mission? IOW, all talk. 3. Apple has patented the beejeezus out of their innovations. Other companies will not be able to use those features, and we've already established that they INHERENTLY lack the creativity/imagination/talent/will to produce something better. Ipso facto. 4, People who believe that (Carrier A) sucks and (Carrier B ) is fabulous are completely full of crap. Each carrier has strengths where they've got the most permits/towers, and weaknesses where they don't. Big picture, they are all roughly equal, and their inequalities vary depending on where you live. It's like saying Monopoly Player #1 rocks because he has a house on Vermont Ave, ignoring the fact that he's got NOTHING on St. James Place, where Monopoly Player #2 just happens to have a hotel. Puh-lease. 5. AT&T is not Cingular. The iPhone is not going to be a Cingular product, and isn't going to act like any previous experience you may have had with a Cingular product, good or bad. This is a new beast born of the ashes of Cingular on the back of SBC (who are currently calling themselves AT&T). Will it suck? Will it rock? Idle speculation, but knowing Steve's obsession with "the experience" I find it hard to believe he made a deal with a carrier that will not provide AT LEAST decent service in metropolitan areas. So I think it will rock more than suck (though OF COURSE there will be people SOMEWHERE for whom it sucks. Blame your local government more than AT&T). Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - incognegro - 05-23-2007 i've been thinking about the next-gen iPod. i'd rather it NOT be like the iPhone. why? i can adjust volume, skip songs, basic functions, WITHOUT looking at the iPod. in other words, by touch. the iPhone & new iPods (if they follow the form factor) won't be navigable by touch, like while driving or jogging. just my take on it. Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - Jack D. - 05-23-2007 Verizon iPhone killer? You bet! I heard they're gonna call it the Vune.... Re: Verizon to produce iPhone killer? - ka jowct - 05-23-2007 Verizon is great. I've used them for years. I assume you just mean you have had good luck with your wireless service from Verizon. I really, really despise Verizon, having been a Verizon landline customer for way too long. They will NEVER give you a good deal. Aside from that a friend of mine (a bright, ethical, hard-working guy) worked for Verizon for a while, and had nothing good to say about them. |
