A pretty old car - laarree - 05-23-2007

Saw this gorgeous old MG parked in my Brooklyn neighborhood while on my way
to the subway earlier today. Pretty, eh? Someone clearly loves the heck out of it.

It's very pretty but my UK based knowledge tells me that it is a replica. Might be wrong of course but there are several companies that do replicas and my guess is that this one is based on, would you believe, a VW!!

If it is the real thing then yes, it looks very well cared for.

yes it's a VW kit car

Re: A pretty old car - voodoopenguin - 05-23-2007

The picture is nice but not clear enough for detail but it does look like the possibility of discs at the front wheel. Also the side hinged single bonnet (hood?) as opposed to a twin centre hinged one are the things I first noticed.

Still pretty but the sound will be completely wrong.

Left hand drive might be giveaway....

That looks like an Apple 30" Display bezel around the windshield.

Definitely a fiberglass VW bug kit car. Not a bad one, but the wheels and VW bumpers always give these away. The MG TC/TD on which the replica is based is truly a beautiful car.

VW kit- the tires are always a dead giveaway. still cute.

My grandmother had a real one of these stolen from in front of her grandmother's house on Park Ave in the 1930's. Five large men surrounded the car, picked it up, put it on a flatbed, and carted it away (She watched out her bedroom window, but was mostly asleep and thought she was dreaming).

If you find it her heirs want it back...

Re: A pretty old car - lost in space - 05-23-2007

Somebody had a really good time building that kit and did a great job, but it's definitely a kit.

Dead giveaways, in order of prominence:
wheels
windshield and frame
turn signals
hood hinges
door hinges

The bumpers actually are pretty authentic.

davester, your example is a TC. I think the replica is supposed to be a later TD, like this one.

Buddy of mine had a TC in high school. Lots of trouble, but lots of fun too.

Once again, I am fooled by a pale imitation of an original. Undecided

I guess if it was an original, the owner wouldn't have dared it park
it out on a busy street in Brooklyn for fear it would get dinged in
some way.
