Powering a 3rd internal SATA drive? - Robo - 06-26-2007 OK, I have one of OWC's SATA PCI cards in my DP G5 (PCI-X). The card has 2 ports which can be used (2-internal, 2-external used in any combo). I have an external attatched to a powered case, but how the heck do I power the thing internally to add an internal drive? On my G4, there was the obvious power connector. Where is it in the G5? Is this the cable I need? Any help appreciated! http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATAPA/ Re: Powering a 3rd internal SATA drive? - macphanatic - 06-26-2007 You will need an adapter to convert the standard ide drive power connector to the one used on sata drives. I've gotten them at Microcenter. http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0260722 Re: Powering a 3rd internal SATA drive? - Robo - 06-26-2007 Thanks, but where do I plug in the old style part of the power connector? Re: Powering a 3rd internal SATA drive? - sscutchen - 06-26-2007 You may still need an adapter if your SATA drive does not have the big ol' power connector like PATA drives have (left). Some do, some don't, and only have the thin printed circuit-looking connection (right) ![]() . Re: Powering a 3rd internal SATA drive? - rz - 06-27-2007 I have the same OWC card and have 2 extra internal SATA drives in my G5. I bought an adapter on ebay that splits the molex (old style power adapter) into two different SATA power connectors. The drives are mounted vertically underneath the optical drive. I placed little rubber feet on them, and then secured them to G5 with screws that go right through the holes in the front case of the G5. Sure it doesn't look pretty, but it saved me the $99 that some company is charging for a 3-drive harness. Works like a charm. |
