Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - decocritter - 06-26-2007 Neighbor is using Ben Moore paint. Condo has not been painted in 20 years. It needs lots of prep, patching sanding. The living room color is medium to dark weird color. New colors are all going to be light. The painter says he does not need to use a primer - just 2 coats of paint on entire job. Opinions?? Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - Seacrest - 06-26-2007 Somebody already asked this question. You should check for the answers in that thread. Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - rgG - 06-26-2007 Benjamin Moore is good paint with good coverage, but using a primer tinted close to the top coat is the better way to go, especially if there are lots of patches. The patched areas may look different if the whole area isn't primed. The hold-out will be different for the patches than the previously painted areas and that is why you may get color variations. Here is a link that explains what causes some common paint problems. http://www.dalyspaint.com/paint_irregularities.html Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - Harbourmaster - 06-26-2007 A Primer/Sealer is a must under the conditions that you describe. No painter worth his brush would consider otherwise. Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - Cary - 06-26-2007 I would insist on a good primer coat, tinted the same shade. Saves money on paint, adheres better, all around a better job. Cary Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - Buzz - 06-26-2007 thank goodness it's only the neighbor's place... you would seal and primer it, because you know better. c'mon, patched plaster walls, covering dark w/ light... painter does want to seal/prime... Opinion? that painter has already inhaled waaaaayyy too many paint fumes... Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - Don Kiyoti - 06-26-2007 I say go with the primer. When i painted a room in my house I went with a darker color over white and had to use 2 coats of tinted primer and the color took 3 coats. Evidently light colors cover better which may be what the painter is thinking, Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - OWC Jamie - 06-26-2007 I could do the job with just one coat of Benjamin Moore paint. It's FANTASTIC paint. You wouldn't have me ever paint another wall you had to look at, again, though. Makes BM sound great, eh ? :-) :-) P.S. : I hate painting. I'd much rather prep for paint and walk away. Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - cbelt3 - 06-26-2007 Sounds like the painter is planning on a little 'repeat' business here.... Kilz it ! (I love that stuff- it's good for bleed through protection from darn near everything. The Shellac version is better, tho..) Re: Painting Plaster Walls, ceilings ... - mrbigstuff - 06-26-2007 bleed through on plaster? how old is the plaster? i've never seen plaster bleed through but maybe if it's brand new plaster? doesn't sound like it if the condo is 20 years old. |
