SIM Card in iPhone? - Mac-A-Matic - 06-27-2007 Does anyone know yet whether or not the iPhone is a SIM Card based phone? Considering that it's running on AT&T/Cingular's GSM system - I thought the GSM standard was to have SIM cards that carry all the basic phone programming. If this is the case, shouldn't we be able to install any SIM card into the iPhone and get it to work - albeit without the "advanced" features? Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - jimbrady - 06-27-2007 No. But Apple ought to make it so. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - macphanatic - 06-27-2007 The WSJ review states that the phone doesn't use a sim card. My guess is that this locks it to AT&T/Cingular until Apple decides otherwise. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - jdc - 06-27-2007 SIM card slot on top http://www.nytimes.com/ref/business/20070627_POGUE_GRAPHIC.html Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - macphanatic - 06-27-2007 Interesting. WSJ article missed that one. Good to know. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - microchip13 - 06-27-2007 It won't be unlocked though, but again I remember iFoneResource wants to change that. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - macphanatic - 06-27-2007 I don't see the benefit of using the iPhone on other carriers. Sure, you'd have a nice phone, but many of the best features wouldn't work. Features such as the visual voicemail won't work unless the carriers reverse engineer and implement support for it. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - Seacrest - 06-27-2007 The iPhone is completely and maniacally controlled by Apple and SBC. You will probably not be able to do x, y or z with it for a good while. Get used to it. Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - Will Collier - 06-27-2007 That thing'll have every hacker from here to Hong Kong working on an unlock method. Of course, one an iPhone gets unlocked, its value shoots up... Re: SIM Card in iPhone? - simonm - 06-27-2007 Hmmm ... No sim card makes for an interesting problem in Europe. I suspect that it would be a non-runner in Europe without a sim card. I have never had a phone without a sim card. Unless it was handed out virtually for free I think even Apple would have a problem with a simcardless phone. Some people carry a phone and multiple sim cards for more than one country to avoid some of the roaming charges for example. |
