Questions about RAM - insight appreciated... - Cary - 06-28-2007 So here's the deal... I have 3 macs - a C2D iMac with 1GB RAM (2 512s), a MacBook CD with 1GB RAM (2 512s), and a Mac Mini CD with 512MB RAM. The nice thing is that they all use the same RAM. I've ordered 5 1GB sticks, with the intention of finding a good deal on 1 2GB stick. This would allow me to max out the iMac at 3 GB, and the others at 2GB. While I'm looking for the 2GB stick, it is my intention to put 2 x 1GB in the iMac, 2 x 1GB in the Macbook, and 1.5 GB in the Mini. Any issues with this plan? Should I be concerned with having mismatched RAM in the Mini? Thanks, Cary Re: Questions about RAM - insight appreciated... - Silencio - 06-28-2007 I think the Mac mini is one of the machines that can boost its overall performance a bit with matched RAM. The other big issue: considering how painful it is to disassemble a Mac mini, and how simple it is to get to the RAM on the other two machines, I would just go ahead and put two of the 1GB SODIMMs in the Mac mini right now. That will save you from having to disassemble the darned thing for a second time! Re: Questions about RAM - insight appreciated... - Filliam H. Muffman - 06-28-2007 From the test resultss on Barefeats, I would say 3 GB of RAM will boost your speed more than a matched pair of 1 GB modules. There are a couple of specific procedures that are faster with matched pairs but I would go with more RAM. You could use a matched pair of 2 GB modules but the mini will not address more than 3.3 GB. The other machines are a piece of cake to upgrade RAM, but the mini is large pain in the keister. Re: Questions about RAM - insight appreciated... - jdc - 06-29-2007 3 gigs is better than 2 matched, check our sponosrs web site they have tests -- larry has stated the same thing on this forum at least a dozen times |
