15 vs 17 MacBookPro - Convenience Edition - lipskidder - 06-28-2007

Who has carried around both sizes? Can you feel significant weight difference? What about accessories? Is a case the only thing you really need to worry about getting that is size specific?

As far as the 15 refurbs, is the only difference between them and the new machines LED and Santa Rosa? That's what I am understanding.

Yes, you can feel the difference also forget about using it on a plane). It's a great laptop, but its not for road warriors.

The new 15"ers also have 2x the RAM.

I agree with Chupa

I had a 12" 15" and a 15" Aluminum G4s *not at the same time)
The 15" seemed to be the sweet spot for size vs portability.
The 17" was great, but unless you are using it as a desktop replacement with little portability--it is the way to go, but as an road warrior tool-too big.

I have a 15" MBP, and point out the size of the 17" to many prospective buyers, and nobody has regretted the 15.4"

When considering the refurbs, make sure you compare Amazon pricing after rebate and no tax everywhere except WA.

What Chupa said. My sister has the 17" PowerBook and always complained about it. The weight, lack of case/enclosure selection, etc., and esp what Chupa said about using it on a plane.

With the systems nowadays being able to so easily handle an external monitor (I use a 23" ACD, they can handle up to the 30" ACD, as I recall) you'd do better to get the 15" and an external display.

I think one of the other diffs (between the new and the refurb) has something to do with the video board it sports (and the RAM as Chupa mentions) but I'm not sure what. No complaints here with my 15" MBP (2.33GHz w/3GB RAM).

The older Mac Book Pros used ATI's X1600 and the new systems now use an nVidia board - 8600m GT.

I'll repeat a question I've asked so far without response - what about using the MBP with an external monitor, KB and mouse with the lid closed. Any drawback?

Re: 15 vs 17 MacBookPro - Convenience Edition - Zoidberg - 06-28-2007

I've never done the closed-lid thing. The only time I tried my MBP went to sleep. I know it can be done but I've not had the need/desire to do it.

why close the lid? use both monitors. That's my home setup. I frankly can't see the complaints others have with the size and weight of a 17" - I have sweaters that weigh more than the 17" (the whole laptop, not just the weight difference from 15" to 17")! Then again, I'm a big guy and never fly. The only reason I chose the 15" is price.

Re: 15 vs 17 MacBookPro - Convenience Edition - Zoidberg - 06-28-2007

FWIW, I never fly either, but I still like the "it's more portable"-ness of the 15 over the 17.

Does anyone have a link to the Santa Rosa performace comparisons? I am wondering if it's worth it to get the new chip or if the refurbs will do me fine.
