How to disable iSight? - yeoman - 07-24-2007

Big day tomorrow - new MBP arrives. But not sure if I want to have iSight always active. I know I can cover the camera but Skype will still recognise the presence of it. I've read I can disable by removing /System/Library/Extensions/Apple_iSight.kext but this requires a reboot, and same to reverse the process. Am I missing some other way?

Well...the little green light always goes on when the camera is actually active. I've been trying to program a way around it and have been unsuccessful. May I ask why you're concerned about it?

Not a pretty sight first thing in the morning!

I know that there are valid reasons to have the iSight disabled (use in secured facilities being the biggest reason). There was a big thread on this in the Apple Federal List about 6 months ago. Sorry, I can't remember what the final outcome was. But you can go onto Apple's website and do a search of the archives.

Skype --> Preferences... Video --> Enable Skype Video (uncheck)

Duct tape... - RAMd®d - 07-24-2007

...is the best answer.

Doesn't clash like black eleictrical tape and doesn't weep adhesive in time. This keeps the NSA from remotely activating your iSight.

It seems to me that a "secure facility" would want to be *very certain* that a potential survellience (sp?)/espionage device were deactivated, ala camera-equipped cellphones at Racer-X's place of employment.

Cellphone cameras are banned in some places and I know that Treos are sold sans camera specifically to comply with corp/gov cameraphone bans.
