I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - pinkoos - 08-07-2007 Based on the rumors floating around, I knew that the iMac's form factor wasn't going to change considerably. Yes, now it's thinner and shinier and blacker, but I'm sick of the slab on an upside down ice cream cone form factor. I mean, Apple started with this form factor with the first G5 iMac. We have gone through multiple cycles with a thinner enclosure, added iSight, then the switch to Intel, then upgraded CPUs and now a thinner and different colored look. But, the form factor is basically the same. I know people say that this form factor is darn near perfect and Apple would be hard pressed to improve on it. I don't believe that. This *is* Apple, after all. If anybody could improve on something already considered perfect, this is the company to do it. Do I have any suggestions on ways to improve it? Well, they don't pay me like I'm sure Mr. Ives gets paid, but at least at the bare minimum, they could have made the stand *height* adjustable. I mean, that would have been easy. What's the next generation iMac going to look like? Well, I don't know, but I hope it's something radically different. Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - MacManMaz - 08-07-2007 Sorry pinkoos, but I like it. Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - lipskidder - 08-07-2007 It's a small footprint. What do you think would be a improved design? Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - OWC Jamie - 08-07-2007 Get a Pontiac for the driveway if you want unconventional. :-) Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - will2000 - 08-07-2007 I love this form factor! Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - Chupa Chupa - 08-07-2007 The iMac is essentially a monitor/CPU all in one. If the guts don't go below the monitor they have to go above (top heavy) or in the back (increases thickness). So unless components get ultra-micro I'm not sure what else Apple can do as far as form factor. Ideally, they'd give consumer a choice by making a decent Mac mini, but I think they are afraid after the Cube fiasco. I think that was a different Apple era though. The cube was too much ahead of its time. Consumer now accept (even enjoy) paying a premium for Apple products. Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - Lew Zealand - 08-07-2007 Any improvements would be subtle. It is already a very simple, clean, and small design. any radical changes would *probably* make it more complex, ugly, or larger. No need to mess with success. Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - Dennis S - 08-07-2007 The only improvement I can think of would be for it to levitate. Re: I'm sick of the iMac's form factor! - pinkoos - 08-07-2007 You guys are, respectfully, missing the point. I essentially agree with everything that's been said. I even said some of the same stuff in my original post. So, does that mean that Apple is just going to continue upgrading the innards but keep the "outtards" the same? Obviously not. Maybe it's a technology limitation as was mentioned above. Once the technology improves to make components smaller and produce less heat, then it will be the time for a radical re-design. All I'm saying is that I'd like to see something new from Apple, sooner rather than later!
