AlphaDog, no, that's part of the problem. Keeping track of the crosses is a nightmare, and so far all the software that I've seen which has been developed for this purpose (most of which is commercial) is PC-only. I don't know that I want to invest in PC-only stuff, and also from what I can see, a lot of it is non-intuitive.
I did sort of like Family, that seemed to give me a halfway decent way of doing it, but haven't paid the shareware fee yet. Here's the link to one tree I made with it (warning, big image): http://img405.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hamstersum9.jpg
