Cell phones; I can' believe I did this. - RgrF - 09-13-2007

I'm a very unhappy NexTel user, their coverage in my area is just awful. My contract is ending next month and for a year I've been collecting bookmarks to sites that could guide me through the thicket.

They're all gone. I don't know where and don't want to think about what else may be lost but in the meantime I need to transport a number to another carrier.

The only reason I ever went with NexTel was because of incoming free minute (I average about 2500-3500/mo with 700/900 outgoing).

I don't need bells and whistles and am being pitched that if I port and am unhappy with the service I can cancel during the first 30 days but I will not be signing any contract with any of these slimeball companies (month to month).

I also have T-Mobile service, it's better reception than NexTel but more $$ for what I need and I'd as soon keep them as a backup. I'd go with Boost but they tell me I cannot port my number to them.

Anyone have any links to sites that will help me through this crap?

Thanks in advance.

How's the Sprint service where you are? You could switch to a Sprint phone (or even one of Nextel's new hybrid phones which use Sprint's CDMA network instead of Nextel's iDEN network for normal calls) and keep the free incoming plan.

Also, you don't have to port your phone number when you switch (in fact, I wouldn't if you want to try out the new service). Once you are happy, then port the number (but you will be paying for both plans until you port the number, though). This is what I did when I switched to T-Mobile.

I had Nextel's free incoming plan, which I loved, but finally switched to T-Mobile's @ Home plan, with WiFi calling.

Unless you go with some type of pre-paid or monthly pre-paid, you will pay a lot more for the phone and sometimes the monthly plan. The T-Mobile voice plan I selected was $40/mo with a 2 year contract, $50/mo with a 1 year contract, I didn't bother asking about no contract.

Steempy, you fool!!

You've pressed the History eraser button!!

You could start with the howardforums.com carrier-discussions.

There's a section on provider rants and kudos. If I were just starting to gather info, I'd search that section by the name of the relevant city/county/region and see what pops up.

I recognize that site Mag and I'm already up there, it's one I stored and lost, I'll find those lost links right after I commit somewhere or other, it's Karmatic.

Thanks for the link and the gibe.

All of those links should be available on your backup drive, right?

I'm always in drive. I only back up when the fool in front of me refuses to move and then I usually run over something.

I avoid backing up it raises my insurance premiums.

Well, don't go with Boost as Boost IS Nextel. You'll have the same coverage with Boost as you do with Nextel.

If your calling is mostly local, you might want to look into MetroPCS. They don't have contracts and I believe have unlimited local calling (incoming and outgoing).

If Verizon's coverage seems good where you are, consider Page Plus.

Around here unless you live near an interstate a Nextel is almost useless.
