does iPhone stream video? - space-time - 09-16-2007
There was an ad on TV last night for ATT wireless and they showed a phone streaming video, but it was not an iPhone. Some question:
1-does ATT have a faster network (3G) than EDGE? what what is EDGE anyway, 2, or 2.5G?
2-Is iPhone (EDGE) fast enough to stream (upload) video? or to receive video for that matter? I am talking about real time video from other cell phones, not about YouTube.
3-when you roam in Europe, does the iPhone data feature work there, I think they have mostly 3G networks over there, not sure if they have EDGE.
4-home come http://www.wireless.att.com/home/ does not feature an iPhone on the front page, also they advertise other phones on TV?

I have been able to stream using Telekinesis from my home server. http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/

Reports are that they are beefing up EDGE--But it will be seen. Downside to EDGE vs 3G-No phone calls while data is downloading

You can stream video on the iPhone through the YouTube app (YouTube only, obviously) and through Safari.
ATT's EDGE is considered 2.5G. ATT also has 3G networks in some metropolitan areas, but availability is not widespread, and I think the main reason Apple left it out of iPhone Rev 1 was because of the horrendous drain on the battery caused by current 3G radios. See also: Blackjack, Samsung.
If you're going to Europe, I'd run one of the iPhone unlocks, buy a prepaid SIM card, put it in your phone while in Europe, and enjoy. ATT's international roaming for voice and data is absurdly expensive.

Yes, it does.
EDGE is technically 3G but most consider it to be a 2.5G or 2.75G protocol.

Yes.
Europe does not mostly have 3G networks. EDGE is available in Europe.

I believe Apple reserved iPhone marketing for itself. IMHO, that's a good decision.
