Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - AAA - 09-26-2007 I was shocked to hear a co-worker (from about 16 years ago) did. So far it's not so bad they say. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - NewtonMP2100 - 09-26-2007 . . .so. . .it was a Shanghai Surprise? ![]() Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - Paul F. - 09-26-2007 I've got no problem living as an expatriat for a couple years... But the pay would have to be pretty good, and I don't think I'd be interested in a long-term thing. I would actually enjoy getting to travel a bit. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - Filliam H. Muffman - 09-26-2007 I know someone that spent almost 3 years in a comparable Chinese city trying to make a living. She was looked down upon by the local middle class business people, even being ethnic Chinese and speaking Mandarin fairly fluently because she was a native English speaker and raised Catholic in another counrty. She seemed to be relieved after she made the decision to leave. There are some pretty substantial expat communities in some cities to hang out with if you do not speak Mandarin but it varies city to city. I have a relative that took a 9 month assignment in Taiwan and generally enjoyed it but a lot more people speak English there. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - rz - 09-26-2007 my wife would probably love it. Me, not so much. And China isn't exactly where I'd like to live at this point. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - MacArtist - 09-26-2007 I am not sure you are going to have to move to Shanghai to eventually end up under Chinese control. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - Mike Johnson - 09-26-2007 When my wife was looking for a new job last year, we looked far and wide before finding one down the street. I don't think Shanghai ever came up, but we certainly would've considered it. It's more appealing than some of the other exotic locales that were on the list. We found that just being willing to just drop this life and start a new one in some foreign land was liberating. And we sometimes regret we didn't get to do that. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - pRON aHOLIC - 09-26-2007 Shanghai is a very international City. It is China's version of NYC with many different foreigners. The main part of the City is modern and up to most Westerner's standards. Unlike Beijing the air is somewhat cleaner since the factories are further from town and they limit the amount of cars plates to vehicle owners. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - $tevie - 09-26-2007 I was going to say what pRON said. I worked with a guy from Shanghai, and it sounded very cosmopolitan and sophisticated by his accounts. Re: Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work? - pokari - 09-26-2007 I visited there on business and I wouldn't mind living there. Like said, it is a very modern city, but it is still a VERY different life and mindset from the West. pokari |
