my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - clay - 02-12-2006 In November, I decided to give Blockbuster's online DVD rental service a try. I have been a member of netflix in the past a couple of times, but just don't normally have the time to watch that many movies, so it's kind of sporadic. I found a code for a free 30-day trial and signed up for the 3-at-a-time plan. Overall, delivery of movies is probably about a day slower than Netflix was for me. I think I was able to get about 3 movies a week, so in a month I could get between 10-12. And I normally ripped the DVDs to my drive for later viewing only (never burning or sharing) and put them back in the mail the next day. So I really was turning these around as fast as possible. Like I mentioned before, delivery was generally slightly slower than netflix, but one upside to this is that they have estimated delivery dates associated with each rental. If the movie didn't arrive on the day that they had estimated, I could always report a "problem" and they would then send out the next disc. This way, I could get a few more movies out of them. The 2 in-store rentals are a nice bonus, and do add $7-$10 value to the service. I found their site less user-friendly than Netflix, and the recommendation feature was less than effective in my experience. Recommendations didn't change even when I rated a bunch of movies. I had planned on just doing the month trial then cancelling, but I forgot to cancel in time, so I had to pay for the second month. When I went to cancel after the 3rd month, they offered me a month free, so I took it. I just cancelled a couple of days ago, so I'm now out of the system. Bottom line--decent selection of movies on their site, but website isn't amazing, and shipping times weren't all that fast. It's nice to get 2 free in-store rentals, though. In the end, I think I still like Netflix better, but Blockbuster does have a pretty good thing going. Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - richie rich - 02-12-2006 thanks for the review!! was just contemplating on doing it, but apparently, it's not worth my time! rr Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - NewtonMP2100 - 02-12-2006 Thanks for the review. . .but becareful. . .you might get "throttled." Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - Carthaigh - 02-12-2006 I have been a netflix member for a couple of years, but now I want to try Blockbuster. Are there any 30 day free trial deals right now? Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - Racer X - 02-12-2006 Depends on where you live. I live in Seattle, and we have a local depot. I usually get about 6 movies a week. And Blockbuster Online just came out with an option for 1 in-store rental per week (with the coupon good for just one week) instead of the 2 a month with a month long coupon. And since I often work from home, the movies usually go back out that same afternoon in the last pick-up from the local PO station 15 blocks from me. So it seems like I end up with twice what you get. YMMV. Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - RgrF - 02-12-2006 This was a review of Blockbuster for people who like to "game" the system. I doubt most users do that. Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - Racer X - 02-12-2006 Even if I returned them next day, it would still likely be over 20/month, and if you have a blockbuster nearby, there are the 4 extra movies a month that Netflix doesn't/can't offer. Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - clay - 02-12-2006 try the following codes for a 30-day trial. don't know if any of them are still valid, but one of them is what I used for mine (don't remember which one worked): friend cooper bbstore Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - Racer X - 02-12-2006 any codes for a full month of Netflix? Re: my review of Blockbuster's DVD rental service - Mactel - 02-13-2006 I ordered a pizza from Papa John's using their web site and they emailed me a free month trial of BB online. I just signed up to test it out myself... |
