Music collection stale-- recommend some new stuff? - ho'ard - 12-01-2007

Looking for rock/alternative recommendations. I don't put much time into keeping up with the latest anymore . . . at the risk of sounding like a commercial suck-up, recent bands (as in still producing music in millenia which start with "2") I think are OK include Coldplay, White Stripes, Franz F, Guster. . . .
Thanks!

BTW-- opinions-- if you legally own an album on vinyl, tape, or CD, are you copyright-infringing by downloading a copy via peer-to-peer?

I just bought "Raising Sand" by Robert Plant, Allison Krauss and T Bone Burnett. Like it very much in an eerie kind of way.

Thanks . . . feeling kind of stuck in the "old names" . . . looking specifically for newer artists.

Yes, it's still copyright infringement. Even looking past the fact that you are downloading the copyrighted material which is illegal even if you own the cd you will also be sharing that material with other users. That's what can really get you in trouble. If you must steal don't help other people steal at the same time. I even remember reading a few months back one of the music industry people said they think ripping your own cd's to your itunes library is copyright infringement. Probably because they want you to buy the songs in the new format from iTunes or amazon.

As for a recommendation, you should pick up Radioheads new album from their site. You know, the pay what you want one.

I had a subscription to emusic for a year and got a ton of new music that way. I had to stop, I couldn't keep up with 3-4 new albums a month. I will join again at some point.

Some of the newer commercial alternative stuff I got off emusic that I really like and has a lot of staying power are The National and the New Pornographers.

If you like Radiohead, In Rainbows is a no brainer great album, but given the audio quality I would pay less then did, so maybe $1-2.

Slightly Stoopid - Everything You Need (2003)

Take the title literally - acoustic guitar to reggae to hip hop to punk
Heavy Sublime influence.

?The National, New Pornographers, In Rainbows, Coldplay, White Stripes, Franz F, Guster? Holy, crap, I've never heard of any of these guys. I'm not going to say another word so I don't start sounding like my father when he used to talk about the music I listened to.

I assume Franz F refers to ferdinand. I don't listen to him, but along the lines of English pop Bloc Party's first album, Bloc Party is really catchy. Not along the lines of English Pop, more like NYC post industrial pseudo cool, I also really like Interpol too, both of their albums.

Slightly Stoopid were pretty catchy (I have to be careful with albums covered in explicit warnings though, since my 8 year old son loves to listen to cool music too).
