Anyone have a Recipe for "Groaty Pudding"? Perhaps our British MRF'ers? - Paul F. - 12-02-2007

And to begin, I'll clarify that "MRF'ers" stands for "MacResource'ers", not any other colloquial :-)

After some extensive googling, it seems that there is only ONE SINGLE RECIPE reposted over and over, almost infinitely, for Groaty Pudding...

This one (verbatim from 11 PAGES of Google results for "Groaty Pudding");
Groaty Dick Pudding Recipe
Serves: 1
Ingredients
Stewing beef; cubed small amount
Onions; chopped
Leeks; chopped
Salt & Pepper omit salt if using bouillon
Oat groats; if you can't get at health food store, try pet store
Stock; homemade, preferable

Directions

1. A traditional Midlands dish for Midsummer's Eve.
2. Put meat (do not brown first) , onions, leeks, salt & pepper and groats in earthenware pot.
3. Pour stock over top and stir.
4. Put lid on.
5. Put in medium-low oven for 16 hours.
6. Groats will absorb stocks and juices and expand.

I have nothing AGAINST this recipe, but when trying (or thinking about trying) something new like this, I would at least like to have more than ONE persons recipe to see if there may be a variation I like better!

And Groats (full grain, uncut, Oats) are not easy to find in "people food" stores...
Fortunately, I have a local health food store with a good selection where they have 'em for $1.49/lb. Smile

Groaty Dick? Could they call it anything that would be less appetizing; I don't think so. Good luck with your search, but please, make up your own moniker for this dish.

Ah, yes... I missed editing that "other" name for Groaty Pudding...

I'm afraid that such things show, most clearly, the difference between "English-English" and "North American-English"...

I won't even get into the recipe for "Faggots and Peas".. Big Grin

>>Perhaps our British MRF'ers?

That's a pretty harsh thing to call someone just for being a Brit --

But hey - it's your thread. Why not ask that mofo Voodoo? There might
be answers for you there, assuming being called a "British MRF'ers"
doesn't offend.

I swear - we can't take you ANYWHERE.

You see why I clarified that in my VERY FIRST sentence?
Didn't want there to be any misunderstandings...
(Next thing you know, there'll be tea in the harbor and the burning of the Capitol if I start an international incident... Hmm... not that we couldn't do with a good Capitol burning again... clean slate, all that....).

Why don't you go wash your groaty dick? You AND Racer X!

That dish is only made once a year for Midsumer's Eve. Sort of like eating haggis at a Robert Burns dinner...not something you want to do more than once a year.

By the way, why not Google the recipe for "Spotted Dick" while you're at it?

Did you find this site? It makes things a little clearer.

You couldn't just settle for bangers and mash, could you. ;-)

I have never heard of it but then I'm not from the Midlands. Surprisingly there is a basic recipe on a BBC website from someone who lives just down the road from me here in Norfolk (East Anglia).

I'll let you know if it's worth having more than once a year once I've tried it... :-)

"Spotted Dick" is easy... $20 and 20 minutes with a woman of questionable virtue...

I missed that one! Excellent!
Bangers and Mash are good, but "been there, done that" :-)

Another excellent one!
Many thanks!

One day I'm going to have to brush up on English Geography a bit... I have a good notion of where Cornwall and Warwickshire are, but most of the rest... well... I need a map. :-)

Thanks again!
