NYC Suggestions - The UnDoug - 12-03-2007

Hi,

We're (me, daughter, and wife) going to drive to NYC tomorrow (from Philly), primarily to visit the American Girl store at 609 Fifth Avenue at 49th Street. We're having dinner there, in fact (at the AG store). Any suggestions for a good lunch in that general area? We'll be driving in, but will park and be walking. Nothing too expensive, will we be anywhere near Katz's deli? Any good ethnic places around there (Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian, etc.)?

Any other suggestions of stuff to check out? We'll only be there from about noon till 10 PM.

Thanks!

You're not that far from the 5th Ave Apple Store.

Re: NYC Suggestions - Markiscool - 12-03-2007

You aren't that far from Carnegie Deli either. (I ate there a couple of years ago because it was close to the Essex Hotel where we were staying).

Katz's deli is on East Houston and Ludlow street.

Get the fresh pastrami---do not get the cold/precooked pastrami. Get the one that they have to take out of the warm water and cut in front of you.

I dream of being able to make pastrami as good as they can...

How to get there? Cab it downtown for lunch...but it's a bit nippy for walking over to the Villiage afterwards.

If you don't mind a little walking, inexpensive and good is all over 9th Ave.
Island Burgers is chicken breast grilled a million ways and great thick shakes. Very small. 766 9th @ 51st.
Afgan Kebab House next door.
Wondee Siam II, 813 9th Ave 53rd & 54th St.
There's a good Tratoria downstairs at Rock Center under NBC. Cucina & Co.
Bombay Masala, upstairs on 148 W 49th between 6th & 7th Ave.
Maison, 1700 B'way & 53rd.
Mangia E Bevi, 9th & 53rd St. a bit more $$$.
Heartland Brewery, slow overpriced bar food nearby.
Delta Grill, 700 9th @ 49th St, a bit more $$$.
Ruby Foos, 1648 Bway @ 49th St, $$$. Slow but really good. Mostly Asian seafood.
Zen Palat. 663 9th Av @ 46 St, vegetarian, very good.
Two Boots Pizza downstairs at Rock Center.
Hale & Hearty soup, very good, very cheap, jam packed, no place to sit. Downstairs at Rock Center.
Dean and Delucas, overpriced but good. slow. Usually seats upstairs. Opposite NBC Today Studios. 49th St Rock Plaza.
The Modern at MOMA, 9 West 53rd.
There are a lot of choices on 9th. The only 2 that I've been to that sucked were Reaniassance Diner and a Thai place on the west side of 49th st.

Here's a great site to find NYC eating:

I would stay out of the tourist areas if price is a concern. There are qiute a few great places to eat along 8th and 9th Ave as mentioned above.

You are not near Katz's. You could try the Carnegie Deli if you want that type of lunch but it is a bit expensive:

I know I like to eat

Re: NYC Suggestions - robfilms - 12-03-2007

the undoug-

fritzs suggestions are really spot on. it all depends what u care to eat and how much u care to spend. i have eaten in:

-Mangia E Bevi, 9th & 53rd St. a bit more $$$./good italian & more reasonable at lunch
-Bombay Masala, upstairs on 148 W 49th between 6th & 7th Ave. /good indian
-Island Burgers is chicken breast grilled a million ways and great thick shakes. Very small. 766 9th @ 51st. or Afgan Kebab House next door./tasty and very reasonable
-Ruby Foos, 1648 Bway @ 49th St, $$$. Slow but really good. Mostly Asian seafood.

all of the lunch menus are more reasonable than the dinner prices.

getting to ninth avenue from american girl is quite easy. just take the 49st bus heading west to 9th avenue. it runs every 10min or so. or simply walk or cab. from 5th ave it is a total of 5 long-ish avenue blocks. weather in nyc tomw is going to be a bit chilly so wear layers and hats/gloves expecially for the younger ones.

across from american girl is rockefeller center with the nyc holiday tree along w/the ice skaiting rink. one block north is saks 5th avenue which often has great holiday windows. and one block north of that is st. patrick's cathedral, well worth the stop. as someone above mentioned, the apple store is at 5th ave and west 59th street. central park and a horse-drawn carriage thru the park is just across the street. i think the rate was $40 for a ride but ymmv.

enjoy nyc. there is truly no place like it.

just one person's opinion.

be well

rob

While at Rockefeller Center do not miss possibly the best view of Manhattan (in Manhattan). Top of the Rock Observation Deck. If you haven't done this touristy attraction, i highly recommend it.

30 Rockefeller Plaza
(Entrance located on 50th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue)

One of my favorite places to eat in your area is a Greek restaurant called "Uncle Nick's". It's about a 20 minute walk to go cross-town from 5th Ave. Not too bad.

After lunch, how about a quick spin through the Museum of Modern Art for some artsy fartsy culture? 53rd St btwn 5th/6th. Pause for a moment to soak in VanGogh's "Starry Night" and then geek out with the current "50 Years of Helvetica" exhibit.

Window shopping? Apple Store, Sony flagship, NIke flagship, LouisVuitton flagship, (are you starting to see a trend here?), Tiffany's, Burberry, Hammacher Schlemmer, even Jacob the Jeweler is within walking distance.
